MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois volleyball team opened Summit League play on Friday (Sept. 23) against South Dakota where they fell in straight sets. With the loss, the Leathernecks fall to 3-13 (0-1 Summit) while the Coyotes improve to 12-2 (1-0 Summit).

"I think we did a really good job of dialing in in the first set. We followed the game plan and came out with confidence and a great energy to start out with," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "We've talked about it before, we have to be able to bounce back after a hard fought, emotional loss, of a set and we did not bounce back tonight. We showed some immaturity in how we responded to that tonight."

Western battled the Coyotes to extra points in the opening set. After finding themselves in a 9-6 hole, the Leathernecks went on a 5-0 run to take an 11-9 lead. Western then built a 16-11 lead following back-to-back kills from Shalyn Greenhaw. Another 3-0 spurt by the Leathernecks extended their lead to 21-16.

Western led 24-20 and looked to close things out when the Coyotes stormed back with a 4-0 run to tie the set at 24-24. The Leathernecks then scored two quick points off of a Coyote attack error and a kill by Shiah Sanders to go up 26-25. Claire Grove had a kill that tied the set at 27-27, but USD scored two straight points to seal the 29-27 set one victory.

In set two, Western could not find much momentum as they found themselves down 13-5 early. The Leathernecks went on a 3-0 spurt following two Coyote errors and a service ace from Kate Hickey, but could not close the gap as South Dakota took set two 25-13 and led the match 2-0.

In the third set, Western kept things close in the opening portion until South Dakota broke away to lead 15-6. WIU then strung together three straight points to cut their deficit to four, 10-6. Down 24-14, Greenhaw came down with a kill to try to get a Western rally going, but the comeback fell short as USD took set three 25-16 and the match 3-0.

Greenhaw led the team with 11 kills, followed by Grove who had seven in addition to 11 digs. Kaili Simmons led the team with 23 digs while Abby Skryd dished out 23 assists.

The Purple and Gold have a quick turnaround as they host Fort Wayne Sunday (Sept. 25). First serve is slated for 1 p.m. inside Western Hall.

"We move forward, we learn from it and we have to turn right back around and focus on our next conference match because Sunday is just as important as Friday," added Richardson.
