MACOMB, Ill. –
The Western Illinois volleyball team fell to Fort Wayne in straight sets on Sunday (Sept. 25). The loss drops the Leathernecks to 3-14 on the year (0-2 Summit League) while the Mastodons improve to 6-9 and 2-0 in league play.

"We need to continue working on our consistency. We have to bring the same energy to every match no matter what it is," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "We have to be technically better in our execution because when we do things the right way we see a better outcome."

The first set was evenly matched as the score was tied six different times. Fort Wayne had a slight 12-11 lead before breaking away on a 3-0 run to lead 15-11. A kill by Shiah Sanders and a Mastodon attack error then cut the Leathernecks deficit to two. Fort Wayne then broke away again to lead 20-15. Shalyn Greenhaw and Riley Schumacher had two kills late in the set, but it wasn't enough as the Mastodons took the first set 25-18.

Western could not find any momentum in the second set and fell 25-9.

The Leathernecks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third set, but couldn't hold on as Fort Wayne built a 9-6 advantage. Back-to-back kills from Greenhaw and Lexi Kolschefski put the Leathernecks back within one, 11-10. Fort Wayne extended its lead to 18-14, but WIU responded from consecutive kills from Greenhaw and Claire Grove to keep things close. The Mastodons eventually broke away following a 3-0 spurt to lead 23-17. Down 24-17, Greenhaw buried a kill to try and keep the Leathernecks alive but it wasn't enough as Western fell 25-20 in the third set and 3-0 in the match.

Greenhaw had a double-double that consisted of a team-leading 12 kills and 13 digs.

The Purple and Gold have a quick turnaround in Summit League play as they travel to Omaha on Tuesday evening (Sept. 27). First serve is slated for 6 p.m. Western returns home on Oct. 2 to host North Dakota State after playing at IUPUI on Friday evening (Sept. 30).
