Men's Soccer Picks Up Win Over IUPUI In Summit League Opener

The Leathernecks defeated IUPUI 2-0 for their first road win.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – In their first Summit League match of the season, the Western Illinois men's soccer team was able to score a 2-0 win on the road over IUPUI Friday (Sept. 23).

"It was a solid team performance tonight and a good response after the weekday loss," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson.

It was not until 31 minutes in, when Ben Fiddes intercepted an IUPUI pass at midfield to score his first goal of the season. The junior midfielder was able to bury a shot from 12 yards out on assist from Jacob Bjornsen to give the Leathernecks a 1-0 lead.

In the 52nd minute, Western was able to get a two-goal lead after Jacob Bevan netted his sixth of the season. Fiddes headed the ball across the six-yard box to Bevan, who was able to beat the keeper.

"Fiddes made a good run with the ball from left back and finished off with his first career goal. He was also involved throughout the match," said Johnson. "Our second goal was headed with a re-start service across the goal mouth for Bevan to finish it off. It was a great way for us to start The Summit League and get our first road win."

As a team, the Leathernecks outshot the Jaguars 15-7, including a 5-2 shot-on-goal advantage. Western recorded nine corner kicks in the match. Defensively, the Leathernecks did not give up any corner kicks to the Jaguars.

Bevan led the Purple and Gold with two shots, one shot on goal and the 52nd minute score, followed by Fiddes, who tallied a goal and an assist. Fernando Pacheco recorded three shots, followed by Aziz Tahir, Alejandro Pacheco and Amadeo Carbo with two. In goal, Tim Hansen played all 90 minutes, totaling two saves in the contest.

Western was able to hold on the rest of the match to improve to 1-0 in Summit League play, as well as picking up its first road win of the season. Up next for the Leathernecks (4-4-1) is their first of three straight home matches at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. Western will look to continue its unbeaten streak at home against Green Bay on Sept. 28 at 4 p.m. (CT).
