Leathernecks Blank Green Bay To Extend Home Win Streak

Western Illinois defeats Green Bay 1-0 in Macomb

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois Fighting Leatherneck men's soccer team extended its undefeated home win streak to four games - their largest since going 5-0 to start 2004 - with a 1-0 victory Wednesday (Sept. 28) over Green Bay.

The Leathernecks (5-4-1) outshot the Phoenix 20-7, and were able to limit Green Bay (2-7) offensively.

"We were worried about their [Green Bay's] technicality and their quickness, but I thought our outside backs did a good job of closing them down before they really generated their pace," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "Our backline also did a good job on their two forwards by limiting their touches. We just didn't give them a lot of looks and were able to keep them in front of us. They like to counter off our dispossession, so I thought our four backs did a great job of holding midfield."

Western Illinois was able to get on the board after junior Ayo Makinde connected with Jacob Bevan for a 31st minute goal. Bevan ran past the Phoenix defense and saw a breakaway opportunity, where he beat the keeper and touched the ball into the back of the net for his seventh goal of the season.

"Bevan came from the right side and made a touch around the keeper to make it look easy. It never is easy, but it came off a great pass from his buddy [Ayo] Makinde," Johnson said. "It was definitely fun for both of them."

In the second half, the Leathernecks were able to hold off Green Bay to secure the win, even after a corner kick by the Phoenix in the 88th minute.

As a team, the Leathernecks limited Green Bay to just two corner kicks and just one shot on goal.

Individually, Bevan led the way with his 31st minute goal to go with his two shots. Both Fernando Pacheco and Aziz Tahir recorded a game-high four shots each, followed by Amadeo Carbo (3) and Maclean Johnson (2). In his debut, Makinde recorded an assist along with a shot.

The Leathernecks return to action next Tuesday, Oct. 4, to take on Milwaukee at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. The match will begin at 4 p.m., and fans can watch live on ESPN3. Following that, the Purple and Gold cap off their third straight home contest with their second Summit League match against Oral Roberts. Kickoff against the Golden Eagles is set for 1 p.m.
