Leathernecks Fall to Milwaukee in First Home Loss

WIU fall 2-0 in home contest to the Panthers.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Fighting Leatherneck men's soccer team saw its undefeated home streak snapped after a 2-0 loss to the Milwaukee Panthers Tuesday (Oct. 4).

Western Illinois fell behind after a pair of early Panther goals within two minutes apart. In the 29th minute, a Panther free kick from the center put the Leathernecks in an early 1-0 deficit. Milwaukee's Francesco Saporito kicked the ball from 25 yards out, hitting the top post and then the ground, bouncing into the goal.

The second score came two minutes later, when the Panthers' Nick Moon scored from 15 yards out in the center of the field off an assist from Peter Raymonds.

"No. 13 punished us by deflecting the ball and our wall didn't do its job. We were supposed to get higher and deflect the ball over, but that goes into energy and a lack of focus in the first half," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "They made a 40 yard run on the second one and found [Nick Moons], who was able to tuck the ball in. We were down 2-0 in a big hole to climb out of, and didn't have enough time to close that gap. We weren't able to come out in the first half and it showed today."

The Leathernecks saw multiple chances in the second half, recording three corner kicks within a six-minute span between the 73rd and 79th minutes, but were unable to capitalize. Both teams recorded two shots on goals, while the Panthers (6-4-1) edged Western Illinois in the shot count 9-8. The Leathernecks were able to record seven corner kicks to the Panthers' five, despite no goals in the match.

Fernando Pacheco led the Leathernecks with two shots, while Armel Kouassi and Ephraim Okeke both recorded a shot on goal.

"I'm hoping that we can recover and bounce back," said Johnson. "Obviously Saturday is a big game for us. It's a league game and we need that second win to protect our home field."

Western Illinois (5-5-1, 1-0) returns to the pitch Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. against Oral Roberts. It will mark the second Summit League match for the Leathernecks, as they will look to go 2-0 in league play at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. The match will be broadcasted live on Fighting Leatherneck All-Access.
