MACOMB, Ill. –
The Western Illinois volleyball team played host to Saint Louis on Tuesday (Sept. 20) where they fell 3-1. After the Billikens took the first two sets (25-19, 25-14) the Leathernecks fought back to take set three 25-20 and battled to extra points in set four before falling 31-29. With the loss, Western falls to 3-12 on the season while Saint Louis improves to 5-10.

"We have to do a better job of coming out and executing a game plan. We had a very specific scouting report and it took us until set three to start putting some of those things into motion. We talked a lot about making changes with a sense of urgency and we just did not do that tonight," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "Whenever you put your back against a wall and you have to fight out of a hole in a game of momentum, which is what volleyball is, you never know what will happen. We have to do a better job executing."

After Saint Louis opened up a 9-5 lead in the first set, they committed four straight errors that cut the Leathernecks' deficit to one, 9-8. Down 18-12 later in the set, Shalyn Greenhaw and Melanie Patenaude had consecutive kills to cut the lead to four. The Billikens then had a 3-0 spurt that put them ahead for good as they took the opening set 25-19.

In set two, the Leathernecks found themselves down 6-4 early. They then went on a 4-0 run highlighted by consecutive kills from Patenaude to lead 7-6. The Billikens then went on a 9-0 run to build a 22-11 lead. Western attempted to come back with three straight points, but the Billikens went on to win 25-14.

A rejuvenated Western team took the floor in set three as they built an early 7-3 lead. They extended their lead 13-9 following two kills from Emilee Dechant and one from Greenhaw. Back-to-back aces from Abby Skryd and another kill form Dechant put the Leathernecks up 24-15 as they looked to put set three away. The Billikens then threatened WIU's lead with five straight points before Greenhaw was able to come up with the final kill of the set as Western stayed alive with a 25-20 set four victory.

Both sides traded points throughout the entire fourth set. Western led 12-11 as the Billikens started to pull ahead with a 3-0 run. Down 21-18, a kill by Riley Schumacher and a service ace from Aleezah Washington quickly cut the deficit to one point. The Billikens looked to take set four with the score at 24-21, but the Leathernecks came storming back with four straight points to take a 25-24 lead. Neither team would back down as they traded points back-and-forth. With the score tied at 29-29, the Leathernecks committed two errors as Saint Louis hung on to take set four, 31-29, and the match 2-1.

Patenaude led the team with eight kills, while Schumacher and Dechant each had seven. Simmons led with 20 digs as Skryd dished out 32 assists.

Western now turns its focus to Summit League play as they take on South Dakota on Friday, Sept. 23, inside Western Hall at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Western hosts Fort Wayne for a 1 p.m. matchup.
