MACOMB, Ill. –
The Fighting Leatherneck volleyball team split a pair of matches on the final day of the Hampton Inn Leatherneck Invitational Saturday (Sept. 17). Western picked up a victory over Southeast Missouri in straight sets before falling to Weber State 3-1. After recording a 2-1 record on the weekend, Western Illinois improves to 3-11.

"Overall on the weekend, I think we did a good job. We took a lot of steps forward in getting some consistency and getting some confidence which is really important heading into conference play," said head coach Kelly Richardson.

MATCH ONE: Western Illinois 3, Southeast Missouri 0

Western opened the day with a 3-0 sweep over Southeast Missouri to grab their third straight victory. It was the program's first three-match win streak since the 2012 season.

"I think the biggest thing that we saw today was their ability to finish. We keep talking to them about when we're in situations, or we're in a position to finish a match or finish a set that no matter what happens we need to be able to do that. I think that they did a good job of coming back out in the third set and not letting them (Southeast Missouri) back in it and just finishing off the match," said Richardson. "That goes back to what we were talking about last night with maturity and starting to see our kids grow in those situations. So they did a good job of keeping it together all the way through the whole match."

In the opening set, Western used a 6-0 run early on to jump ahead 8-2. The Redhawks then worked their way back to cut their deficit to two, 12-10 to force a Leatherneck timeout. Western came out of the break and went on a 5-1 run to give themselves a comfortable 17-11 lead. The Leathernecks were in control throughout the remainder of the set and took the 25-20 set victory.

In set two, Western held a 12-4 advantage following an 8-0 run that included three consecutive kills from Shalyn Greenhaw. Later in the set, the Redhawks threatened Western's lead with a 5-0 run to pull within three, 20-17. However, Western would respond with four straight points powered by back-to-back kills from Greenhaw and one from Shiah Sanders to lead 24-17. Greenhaw would deliver the set point as the Leathernecks earned the 25-18 second set win.

The two teams kept things close in set three. Down 11-12, Western would take the lead following three SEMO errors. A late 4-0 run helped the Leathernecks extend their advantage to 21-16. Up 22-18, Riley Schumacher, Melanie Patenaude and Shiah Sanders would deliver three straight kills to give Western the 25-18 set victory as they swept Southeast Missouri 3-0.

Lexi Kolschefski tied her season high nine kills, while Greenhaw led the team with 13. Skryd dished out 37 assists, while Patenaude led the team with a career-high 15 digs.

MATCH TWO: Weber State 3, Western Illinois 1

After dropping the first two sets (25-15, 25-19), the Leathernecks battled back to take set three 25-23 before dropping set five to undefeated Weber State 25-10.

"I think that tonight, at the end of a long tournament when you've had a lot of emotional highs you still have to be able to come out and compete 110% even though it's the last one and you're tired and you're worn out emotionally and physically," added Richardson. "We'll get there, but we took good steps forward this weekend getting things done."

Weber State opened an 8-2 lead that Western could not cut down in the opening set. Down 18-11, Western would score three straight points to put themselves within five, but WSU kept the advantage. The Wildcats were able to score five straight points to take the set 25-15.

The Leathernecks played Weber State close in set two as the score stayed tied throughout the first portion. With the score tied at 8-8, Weber State scored five straight to move ahead 12-8. Western worked to cut their deficit to 21-17, but struggled to find momentum as Weber State held on to take set two 25-19.

Both the Leathernecks and the Wildcats traded points through most of the opening half of set three. Western's first lead came after two WSU errors and two service aces from Patenaude put them up 16-14. Schumacher and Dechant then delivered two straight kills to put Western up by three, 20-17 and forced a Weber State timeout. After the Wildcats made three straight errors to put Western up 23-17, they fought back with a 4-0 run to come within one point. Dechant then came through with back-to-back kills to keep Western alive as they claimed the fourth set victory, 25-23.

Western could not find any traction in the fourth set as they fell 25-10.

Both Kolschefski and Dechant led the team with seven kills. Simmons led the team with 23 digs. Western had a good night at the net as they tied their season high as a team with 12 blocks, led by Schumacher (6) and Kolschefski (4).

The Leathernecks return to Western Hall on Tuesday, Sept. 20 as they host Saint Louis for Educator Appreciation Night at 6 p.m.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Lexi Kolschefki and Kaili Simmons represent Western on the Hampton Inn Leatherneck Invitational All-Tournament Team. Megan Thompson of Weber State was named the MVP. Jesse Hover (Weber State), Rylin Roberts (Weber State), Michelle Thommi (Drake) and Nzingha Clarke (Southeast Missouri) round out the team.
