MACOMB, Ill - Western Illinois football continued fall camp Friday afternoon (Aug. 5) with practice number three. The Leathernecks continued to work on all phases of the game in the warm Western Illinois summer weather.

Offensive Coordinator Doug Malone stated that although getting a football team's offense polished during fall camp typically takes time, there is still plenty to be happy about early in camp.

"Typically the offense always starts a little bit slower than the defense anytime you (start fall camp), but I love our enthusiasm and I love the way that our guys come to compete every day. We still have a long ways to go but you can still see a lot of bright spots that are there as well," said Malone.

Malone also touched on how important fall camp is for a football team, and that it's more than just practice that makes a group succeed.

"Any time that you go to camp guys live together... and you can't beat that time with your brothers. Just being together. Sweating, bleeding, and competing together... that's what it's all about. That makes all the difference in having a good football team," concluded Malone.

The Leathernecks continue their fall camp practice schedule tomorrow at 4 p.m.

PRESEASON POLLS: It has been eight years, but the Western Illinois football program begins fall camp as a Preseason 'Top 25' ranked team… The Leathernecks received rankings in three national polls: 16th in Sporting News, 17th in Lindy's College Football, and 19th in the Athlon College Football… The STATS FCS 'Top 25' poll and the FCS Coaches poll are both scheduled to be announced on Monday (Aug. 8)… Western was ranked 22nd in the 2008 preseason Coaches poll, and the last time the Leathernecks ranked higher in the off-season was a #12 ranking by The Sports Network in 2004.
