Madison Lefler - A Leatherneck Summer

Track and Field student-athlete studies abroad.

Track and Field student-athlete Madison Lefler shared her story of studying abroad in France as part of the series featuring members of the Western Illinois Athletic Department: A Leatherneck Summer

I had the opportunity this summer to study abroad in Tours, France. It is a city about two hours away from Paris, in the Loire Valley. This region is known for its castles (or "Chateaux") and its wine! I studied at the Institut De Touraine, a language intensive school. I attended school Monday through Friday mornings and furthered my French language education.

While in France, I had the opportunity to visit other regions. My first visit was to Mont Saint Michel. It is located right outside of Normady, France. The island is beautiful! The church is considered to be a miracle from God because it's built on the summit of the island. After Mont Saint Michel, I traveled to the town of Saint Malo. It is a coastal city with gothic architecture and known for its amazing seafood. I tried their mussels along with escargot. It was delicious! The next weekend we travel to a castle called "Chateau de Chenonceau". It was built in the 16th century constructed on the water. The next weekend I traveled to Paris. I visited the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Champs-Élysées, Arc de Triomphe, Musée d'Orsay, Louvre, Sacré-Cœur, Jardin Tuileries, and Père Lachaise Cemetery. While I was in France, Paris was hosting the Euro football cup. It was a fantastic atmosphere to experience. There were football fans from everywhere! It was wonderful getting to meet people from all over the globe.

For the rest of the summer, my family and I will be taking a quick vacation to South Carolina. Then I will be returning to Macomb to work on a research project.

I am working on arboviruses in ticks. I will be isolating RNA from ticks and looking for specific cDNA sequences to see what viruses the ticks carry. I am excited to start my project and be working with the biology honors department. I am a double major in French and biology. I will be graduating with my Bachelors this May. After graduation, I am hoping to attend Veterinary school.
