MACOMB, Ill. –
Western Illinois remained within striking distance during most of games one and two of the doubleheader, but Oral Roberts combined for 12 runs scored during the final two innings of each game. The Leathernecks suffered a 6-0 and 11-1 Summit League defeat Saturday afternoon (April 9) at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.

GAME 1
The day started as a match-up between the two teams tied for first in the Summit League.

Both teams put scoreless frames up in the first four innings. ORU (19-12 overall, 9-3 Summit League) got a leadoff single in the fifth, then with two outs used four consecutive hits to take a 3-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles used more two-out hitting to add to the lead in the eighth thanks to a 2-run home run by Brent Williams. An insurance run in the ninth accounted for the final margin.

Pinch-hitter David Dobrinich walked to start the ninth but he was erased on a double play. Nick Wood finished off the 1-hitter and did not face above the minimum 27 batters in the game.

Nathan Pollock's single to start the third was the only base hit for Western as no runner advanced into scoring position. Roman Visintine went 0-for-3 to snap his personal-best 14-game hitting streak.

Joe Mortillaro (2-4) turned in a solid start, allowing three runs in seven innings and struck out three to one walk allowed.

Wood (3-1) walked one and struck out seven in the complete game shutout. Matt Whatley had three hits and two RBI.

GAME 2

The Leathernecks quickly got on the scoreboard in the first inning of game two. Two batters in, Chris Tschida doubled and took third on a throwing error by the right fielder. He scored on Colton Pogue's sacrifice fly.

ORU tied it in the fourth. Whatley led off the inning with a double that was misplayed in the outfield. He took third on a single and scored on a sacrifice fly.

The Golden Eagles took a 2-1 lead thanks to a solo home run in the sixth. ORU broke the game open with three runs in the seventh inning and six in the eighth.

Western (9-20, 7-5) looked to extend the game in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with three walks, but a flyball ended the 10-run rule game.

Ian Koch (1-4) only gave up two runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings. He didn't issue a walk and fanned four.  Colan Borchers needed three pitches to record the final two outs of the eighth. Outside of Borchers' scoreless two-thirds of an inning, Western's relief pitchers on Saturday allowed 12 runs on 16 hits.

Tschida recorded two of the WIU's five hits.

Cale Timms (3-1) gave up an unearned run in five innings. Whatley finished 4-for-4 with an intentional walk and reached base safely in his last nine plate appearances of the day. The 3-4-5 hitters for ORU tallied 13 hits, five runs and seven RBI in the finale.

"Today we were right where we needed to be in both those games. You can't expect your starters to go more than what they're capable of, you have to find ways for your bullpen guys to come in and shut them down. You have to find a way to stay checked in for 18 innings. That's difficult to do but that is part of it when you play doubleheaders," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "I give their pitchers credit. That's how they (ORU) have been. They've lost three Friday games in the league and come back to win the next two all three times.

"We're still right where we need to be, just two games out of first almost at the halfway point… If you told me going halfway through to conference you'd be two games out of first I would have taken that," said Brownlee.

Western continues the seven game homestand on Wednesday (April 13), playing host to St. Ambrose. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. The first half of Summit League play wraps up next weekend at home when Western plays host to Fort Wayne on Alumni Reunion Weekend, starting Friday afternoon.
