Baseball Drops Game Two at SDSU

Roman Visintine records two of the team’s four hits

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Western Illinois took a lead in the fourth inning, but South Dakota State scored four unanswered runs in a 6-3 decision on Saturday afternoon (April 30). With the loss, Western falls to 12-26 overall and 9-11 in The Summit League.

The Jackrabbits (17-25, 11-9) jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first inning thanks to a pair of RBI singles. In the third, Cord Church walked and stole his third base of the series but it was erased on a strikeout-caught stealing double play.

In the fourth, Chris Tschida walked then Deion Thompson got hit by a pitch. Adam McGinnis sacrificed both runners into scoring position. Nick Schrader grounded out to bring home a run. Western's first base hit of the game came on Conner Currier's RBI double to tie the score. After Mark Garton walked, both runners stole a base. Trying to get Currier out at third, the throw went into the outfield and Western took a 3-2 lead.

It would be short lived as SDSU responded with three runs of its own off Sam Cottingham-Beard in hits half of the inning. With the bases loaded and one out, the Jackrabbits used a throwing error, sacrifice fly and RBI single to regain the lead for good. A run scoring single in the fifth ended up as the final margin.

The Leathernecks were limited to four hits, a day after recording 16 hits in the series opening win. Roman Visintine contributed two of the hits and McGinnis accounted for the other hit along with Currier.

Cottingham-Beard (1-2) allowed five runs, but just two were earned, off five hits in four innings. He walked four and struck out three. Jordan Pannell pitched four innings and gave up a run on two hits.

"We battled through in some very tough conditions, temperatures in the high 30s with 40 MPH winds. The difference in our game today and yesterday was free bases. Yesterday we gave up three free bases and today we had 10," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "Consistent defense and pitching is key to getting on a roll. Matthew Sturchio will get his first start tomorrow, and we're looking forward to him taking advantage of his opportunity."

Landon Busch (7-2) pitched five scoreless innings of relief, walking two and striking out five. Jesse Munsterman and Cody Sharrow had two hits apiece for SDSU.

The series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday (May 1).
