Western Loses Game One at NDSU

Chris Tschida hits a 2-run homer

FARGO, N.D. – Western Illinois took an early 3-1 lead in the series opener at North Dakota State, but the host Bison scored 11 unanswered runs and took the opener 12-3 on Friday night (April 22).

Roman Visintine reached on an error to start the game then Chris Tschida singled him to third. Colton Pogue reached on a fielders choice to score the game's first run. NDSU tied it in its half of the first.

In the third, Western (10-24 overall, 7-9 Summit League) took a 3-1 lead when Visintine lined a one-out single then Tschida followed with his third homer of the year. The Bison took a 5-3 lead in the fourth. Danny Regan lined a 2-run double then two batters later Logan Busch delivered a 2-run single. Western had an excellent opportunity during the next half inning to tie or take the lead.

McShane singled with one out then Visintine followed with a single. Tschida reached on an error to load the bases with one out. Blake Stockert was able to get out of the inning thanks to a strikeout and popout to the catcher. NDSU (19-17, 6-10) broke the game open scoring five times in the bottom of the fifth to put the game away.

Visintine, Tschida and McShane (tying career-high) all finished with two hits. Aaron Michel (1-6) suffered the loss allowing eight earned runs in 5.0 innings. He walked two and struck out four. Jimmy Perkins did not allow an earned run in 2.2 innings and Robert Nunn worked one-third of an inning. The Leathernecks registered nine hits but committed four errors which led to four of the runs being unearned.

Stockert (1-3) allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings. Colin Baumgard pitched three innings for his first save of the year. Regan finished with three hits and three RBI.

Due to rain in the forecast for Sunday, the two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.
