Leathernecks Split Saturday Doubleheader

Western wins the opener 12-8 but drops the finale 3-0

FARGO, N.D. – Western Illinois won the opening game of Saturday's Summit League baseball doubleheader 12-8 at North Dakota State, but despite out-hitting the Bison lost the nightcap 3-0. The Leathernecks moved to 11-25 overall and 8-10 in the Summit League while NDSU stands 20-18, 7-11.
 
 
GAME 1 – WIU 12, NDSU 8
The Leathernecks were able to overcome a season-high six errors in the contest to capture the doubleheader opener. Western jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after one inning. Roman Visintine singled to start the game followed by a single from Chris Tschida. Two batters later Adam McGinnis was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Conner Currier delivered a 2-run single. Then after another hit batter loaded the bases, Cord Church lined a 2-run single.
 
Western added a run in the third when Church plated Mark Garton on a RBI single. In the fourth, Currier grounded out but was able to score Deion Thompson on the play. During the fifth Church singled to start and took second on a sacrifice bunt. The Bison made one of their six errors in the fifth with Visintine up to bat and scored Church. Visintine would later score on Tschida's sacrifice fly to make it 8-0.
 
NDSU cut the deficit to 8-3 but Western responded with four runs in the eighth. Thompson hit his team-leading fourth home run. Garton hit a sacrifice fly then later Church delivered another 2-run single to make it 12-3. NDSU scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth and three in the ninth on a two-out, 3-run homer for the final margin.
 
Ian Koch (2-5) picked up the win in 6.2 innings of work. He allowed three unearned runs on six hits and struck out four. Jordan Pannell worked the remainder of the game, striking out six in 2.1 innings.
 
Church, who entered the day with only four hits on the year and no RBI, set career-highs of four hits and five RBI. Currier and Tschida added three hits apiece and Currier added three RBI.
 
Starter Parker Trewin (0-1) suffered the loss for NDSU, charged for four runs on five hits in two innings.
 
GAME 2 – NDSU 3, WIU 0
Western out-hit the Bison 5-3 in the game but came up short in the finale. Visintine singled up the middle to start the game but was erased. In the second they put two runners on but two popups ended the threat.
 
NDSU struck first on a RBI groundout in the third then later plated two in the fifth, taking advantage in the fifth on the lone error of the game.
 
Western threatened in the eighth putting Church on with a walk then stole second but NDSU kept the shutout going.
 
In the ninth McGinnis and Currier walked but the threat came to an end after a pair of pop-ups.
 
Visintine and Nick Schrader added a pair of hits and Garton had a hit to account for the team's five. Sam Cottingham-Beard suffered the loss allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits in 6.2 innings in his first collegiate weekend start. Matthew Sturchio pitched the final 1.1 innings.
 
Jordan Harms (6.0 innings, 6 Ks) and Brian VanderWoude combined for the shutout. VanderWoude fanned four in relief. Juan Gamez accounted for two of the team's three hits.
 
The Leathernecks return home for a doubleheader on Wednesday (April 27), playing host to SIU-Edwardsville. The games can be seen live on ESPN3 with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
