MACOMB, Ill. –
Western Illinois jumped out to an early lead but Fort Wayne pulled ahead for good with a six run sixth inning in an 11-5 decision on Saturday afternoon (April 16). The Leathernecks dropped to 10-22 overall and 7-7 in the Summit League.

Mark Garton took advantage of runners at second and third by executing a squeeze bunt, and beating the throw to first for a RBI hit. Nick Schrader delivered a RBI single then Deion Thompson delivered a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead after one inning.

Fort Wayne (16-19, 3-11) got a run back in the second on a two out rally thanks to two walks and two hit batters. The Mastodons tied the game in the third with two runs but Western regained the lead in the fifth on Schrader's sacrifice fly.

The sixth inning proved to be the difference though for Fort Wayne. Greg Kaiser hit the first of his two home runs in the game – and now five in the series – with a 2-run shot for a 5-4 lead. In all the Mastodons sent 11 batters to the plate and ended with six runs. Kaiser hit a solo homer to lead off the seventh.

Thompson, making his first start since late February, hit a solo homer in the eighth for the final margin.

Starter Joe Mortillaro left the game in the third inning with a hand injury. He was charged for three runs on three hits in 2.2 innings. Jordan Pannell pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings. Nick Milligan (2-1) was charged for the loss, allowing six runs in just over an inning of work. Matthew Sturchio struck out a season-high four batters in 2.2 hitless innings of relief.

"We got put in a tough situation with Joe's finger. He threw really well but obviously that puts you behind the eight ball. The guys we brought in have been in those situations before. We just had to find a way to keep it close there late in the game," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "You can't have that many free bases on a day like today anyway. We had some guys put a good swing on the ball but not up and down the lineup like we need on a day like today where conditions were you could put up some runs. The last two days haven't gone the way we wanted but you can't dwell on it. You have to have selective memory when things aren't going your way, just evaluate it, learn from it and move on. That's where we have to come out tomorrow."

Thompson drove in two runs as did Schrader. Thompson, in just his seventh game played this year, moved into a share of the team lead with his third homer. Four of his five hits have gone for extra bases.

Kaiser finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI. Trevor Storie (3-5) picked up the win allowing four runs in six innings with two walks and four strikeouts. Damian Helm earned his first save of the year giving up a run in three innings.

Game three of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon (April 17) at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.
