Western Loses Series Finale to Fort Wayne

Mark Garton had two hits and Deion Thompson drove in a run

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois dropped its Summit League weekend series finale to Fort Wayne, an 8-1 decision on Sunday afternoon (April 17) at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.

Fort Wayne jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a RBI groundout. The Mastodons extended the lead to 3-0 in the sixth using a pair of singles and an error to eventually score two runs.

Western got a run back in the sixth on Deion Thompson's sacrifice fly that scored Roman Visintine, who led off the inning with a single.

During the IPFW seventh, four consecutive singles to start the inning, and five hits in all, with a sacrifice fly accounted for the four runs to extend the lead to 7-1. The Mastodons (17-19 overall, 4-11 Summit League) added an insurance run in the ninth with a RBI single.

The Leathernecks threatened to cut into the deficit putting two runners on with two outs in the seventh, eighth and ninth inning but came away empty

"We just didn't play well (this weekend). Give Fort Wayne credit they played better than us in all three phases," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "We had been playing good baseball for the most part. When you get into situations where the pitching isn't doing well then the offense needs to pick up the slack or when the offense isn't going well the pitching and defense needs to pick it up… Fort Wayne came in 1-11 (in Summit League) and they didn't play like they were 1-11. We've got to evaluate this weekend. There are some things offensively we need to work on this week. Fastball command is something we need to work on the mound this week as well."

Mark Garton had a pair of singles for Western (10-23, 7-8), who was out-hit 13-7 in the contest.

Starter Ian Koch (1-5) was charged for six earned runs on 10 hits in six innings. Jordan Pannell pitched a scoreless seventh and Nate Westfahl struck out a season-high four batters in his two innings of work.

Greg Kaiser continued his hot bat for the Mastodons, finishing 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two walks. Brandon Pease (1-1) gave up an unearned run on four hits in six innings. Jake Weber picked up his fifth save by going the final three innings, scattering three hits.

The Leathernecks travel to SIU-Edwardsville this Wednesday (April 20), first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
