WIU Loses Game One at Omaha

Adam McGinnis and Roman Visintine both reach double-digits in hitting streak; Nick Schrader has two hits and a RBI

OMAHA, Neb. – Western Illinois gave up three runs in the first inning and could not come back against Omaha, falling 6-1 in the Summit League series opener Friday afternoon (April 1). During the game, Roman Visintine and Adam McGinnis both extended their career-best hitting streak to 10 games each.

Visintine started off the game with a single but Western could not get a runner into scoring position. Starter Aaron Michel ran into problems quickly, allowing a single and hit batter to reach to start the bottom of the first. National RBI leader Clayton Taylor lined a 2-run triple during the next at-bat for Omaha before scoring himself on a sacrifice fly two batters later for a 3-0 lead.

Nick Schrader singled to start the second but he was eventually erased on a fielder's choice. Taylor added a RBI single in the bottom half of the second for a 4-0 advantage.

Visintine reached on a bunt single with one out in the third, and would move to second base on a balk. Colton Pogue singled with two outs then Conner Currier walked to load the bases. Schrader singled to centerfield for his 10th RBI of the year, but Currier was thrown out at third base to end the inning.

McGinnis extended his hitting streak with a leadoff single in the fourth. Western (6-17 overall, 4-3 Summit League) threatened in the eighth when Pogue walked with one out and Currier singled to put runners at first and second. But the Mavericks got a pair of flyballs to left field and ended the threat.

Omaha (15-11, 6-1) added a two-out RBI single in the fifth and a bases loaded walk in the eighth for the final margin.

Michel (1-4) was charged for five runs on six hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out five. Colan Borchers gave up an unearned run on one hit in two innings of relief.

Visintine and Schrader had two hits apiece for Western.

"We didn't have anything to show for our effort today. Aaron pitched well. Omaha did a good job of finding holes though," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "We had really good at-bats against (Tyler) Fox and barreled balls up that were right at their defense. Our goal tomorrow is to bring our energy for every pitch."

Tyler Fox improved to 6-1, allowing one run on seven hits in seven innings for UNO. Taylor led the Mavs with two hits and three RBI.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday afternoon (April 2) at 1 p.m.
