MACOMB, Ill. –
Western Illinois fell behind early and closed out its seven game homestand with a 13-5 loss to Illinois Springfield on Tuesday (March 29). Adam McGinnis and Roman Visintine extended their hitting streak to nine games each as the Leathernecks went 4-3 during the stretch at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.

UIS (9-10) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first, spurred by a 3-run homer by Jason Galeano. Western (6-16) got a RBI single from Conner Currier in the first and looked to close the gap more, but with the bases loaded and one out the Leathernecks could not push across any more runs.

"I say it every year when you play non-Division I teams those are always your scariest games to coach. If you don't come out ready to go things like that can happen, that showed. We walked two guys in the first and today was the right day to give up runs if you are not down in the zone," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "We didn't do a very good job pitching down when we needed to and we made some mistakes. We gave up three big innings. We had multiple opportunities to score. That's part of getting back into the game.

"It's a 4-1 (game) and you have the opportunity to go 4-2 and then maybe 4-3 but we didn't. All you had to do there was tie that game up and it's a different story," said Brownlee.

McGinnis hit his first home run of the year, a solo shot in the third inning to cut the deficit to 4-2. Western missed on opportunities in the fourth and fifth inning, putting a pair of runners on base each inning but was held scoreless.

The Prairie Stars added a 3-run homer from Trey Hannam in the fifth inning and a solo homer in the seventh from Adam Warda to make it 8-2.

In the eighth, Western staged another rally. Visintine singled with one out. Chris Tschida and Colton Pogue walked to load the bases. Two batters later Nick Schrader lined a 2-run single to right cutting the deficit in half. However, in the ninth UIS sent 10 batters to the plate and added five runs.

After a pair of runners reached on an error in the ninth, Visintine lifted a sacrifice fly for the final margin.

Pogue finished with four walks, the most by a Leatherneck in five years and tying the single-game record. Steve McShane recorded two hits, his first multi-hit game as a Leatherneck. However, for the second time in the homestand, Western stranded 15 or more runners as the team left 15 on the basepaths Tuesday.

Starter Jimmy Perkins (0-2) settled down after the four-run first inning, going 4.1 innings. The first of six pitchers, the freshman walked three and struck out three.

UIS out-hit Western 16-7 as Warda and Austin Muench had three hits apiece. Adam Gregory (2-2) allowed two runs on five hits in four innings.

"That's the only thing I'm disappointed in… first midweek game at home you got a chance to keep it rolling. We've been playing really well and you've got a chance to keep it rolling but we didn't give ourselves a chance today with our approach at the field," said Brownlee. "But that is overwith and now you have to get ready for Omaha."

Western returns to Summit League play this weekend in a battle of the top two teams. The Leathernecks (4-2 SL) travel to Omaha (5-1) for a three-game series, starting Friday afternoon at 1 p.m.
