MACOMB, Ill. – With Summit League play on the horizon, the Western Illinois softball team will be wrapping up non-league invitational play at the Hoosier Classic this weekend (March 18-20) in Bloomington, Indiana. The Leathernecks play one game on Friday against Bowling Green at 3 p.m. CT, and one on Saturday against Indiana at 1:30. Western closes out the invitational on Sunday with two games, facing both Michigan State and Wright State, beginning at 9 a.m.
 
LEATHERNECK LEADERS: Karissa Kouchis has compiled a career-high 32 hits from the leadoff position… She ranks third in The Summit League with a .381 batting average… The senior has a slugging percentage of .452 with two doubles and two triples… Senior outfielder Tierney Bottino leads the team with 12 RBIs and has hit the team's lone home run this season… Emily Ira leads the team on the mound with a 3-9 record and ranks second in The Summit League with 67 strikeouts.
 
SCOUTING THE FALCONS: Bowling Green is 11-10 this season and enters the weekend on a two game winning streak… In the box, the Falcons are led by Marisa Shook and Chelsea Raker… Raker is batting .429 with 24 hits, five doubles, 14 RBIs and a slugging percentage of .661... Shook leads the team with seven home runs and 16 RBIs, garnering a slugging percentage of .734. In the circle, Kiley Sosby has compiled a 7-3 record with a 2.48 ERA… She has struck out 55 batters and has only allowed 22 earned runs through 62 innings pitched.
 
SERIES HISTORY: Western leads the all-time series 3-1 and has won three of the last four meetings… This is the first time the teams have faced one another since March 5, 1994 where the Leathernecks took a 6-4 decision on neutral ground.
 
SCOUTING THE HOOSIERS: Indiana is the second Big Ten team the Leathernecks have faced this season… The Hoosiers are 14-9 overall… Indiana relies on Tara Trainer and Josie Wood in the circle, as the two have seven wins apiece… Trainer has compiled an impressive 94 strikeouts and has allowed 20 earned runs over 68 innings pitched… Wood is 7-3 overall and has pitched 77 innings with 71 strikeouts and 29 earned runs… At the plate, Rebecca Blitz is batting .362 with 25 hits, 10 walks, 10 runs, and 13 stolen bases… Kelsey Doto leads the team with 14 RBI, 14 walks, and four doubles.
 
SERIES HISTORY: Indiana leads the series 20-7… The two teams last faced off on April 22, 1997 where Western lost by a score of 1-8… The last win over the Hoosiers came in 1995 by a score of 2-1.
 
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS: Michigan State has posted a 14-10 record in 2016… Lia Foerster is batting .451 with five doubles and three triples… Celeste Wood leads the team with 18 RBIs, three home runs and nine stolen bases… The Spartan's ace is Kristina Zalewski, she's 6-6 from the circle and has garnered 94 strikeouts over 83.2 innings pitched.
 
SERIES HISTORY: Western leads the all-time series 13-8… The Leathernecks came away with the win the last time the two teams faced off on March 7, 1996 by a score of 3-2.
 
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS: Wright State is 8-12 overall… Honnah Susor leads the team with a .381 batting average… She's compiled 11 runs off of 24 hits with two doubles, two triples, nine RBIs, and five stolen bases… Montana Wear is 2-5 from the circle with a 1.60 ERA… She's given up 21 earned runs over 48 innings pitched.
 
SERIES HISTORY: WIU has the 5-1 advantage over the Raiders… Western took the first five meetings, but dropped the last game between the two teams on March 4, 2012 by a score of 4-2.
 
LAST TIME OUT: The Leathernecks took on Wichita State on Tuesday (March 15) where they fell by a score of 9-4... Nina Maggio led the way with a career high three RBIs off of three hits... Aly Compton scored a career-high two runs... Karissa Kouchis compiled two hits...  Brooke Stulga made her second start of the season, pitching 3.1 innings with nine hits and six earned runs. Payton Abbott came in for relief, making her second appearance on the year. Abbott pitched 2.2 innings, limiting the Shockers to one hit, one walk, and struck out two… On March 16, Western took on No. 15 Missouri in a doubleheader… Kelsey Marlow led the way in game one with two hits and a walk, but the Leathernecks dropped a 6-0 decision… Western also dropped the second game by a score of 6-0… Kacyee Hart pitched a complete six innings, only giving up five earned runs off of five hits.
 
UP AHEAD: Western plays at home for the first time this season after playing the first 29 games away from Macomb… The Leathernecks open Summit League play with a series against South Dakota State on March 25-26… The two teams play two games on Friday at 2 and 4 p.m….
