WIU Softball Announces 2016 Schedule

Leathernecks will play nine home games at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois head softball coach Holly Van Vlymen announced the 2016 schedule on Thursday (Dec. 17). The Leathernecks will play 42 regular season games during the 2016 campaign, nine of which will be played in front of a home crowd at Mary Ellen McKee stadium.

The Purple and Gold open the season with three consecutive tournments in February, beginning with the Ramada UNI-Dome Classic on Feb. 12-14 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. For the third consecutive season, WIU will participate in the Total Control Sports Invitational hosted by UIC the following weekend on Feb. 20-21. The Leathernecks will travel to Auburn, Alabama, for the Tiger Invitational on Feb. 26-28 to close out the month.

In March, the Leathernecks will head to Ohio for the Miami Invitational on March 5-6. The following weekend, WIU will open it's longest road swing of the season, consisting of 12 games over spring break. The trip will open with five games at the Jayhawk Invitational on March 11-16, which is hosted by Kansas. Play will continue with a game at Wichita State on March 15, followed by a doubleheader at Mizzou on the 16th. The spring break road trip and tournament play will conclude with the 2016 Hoosier Classic hosted by Indiana on March 18-20, when the Fighting Leathernecks will face four different squads. 

South Dakota State will visit Macomb for the 2016 home opener and the beginning of league play on March 25-26 for a three-game series. 

The following weekend, the Leathernecks will travel to South Dakota for three games against their Summit League foe on April 2-3. Following a mid-week doubleheader matchup at SIU-E on April 12, Western will welcome the 2015 Summit League Champion North Dakota State to Macomb on April 23-24 for a three-game series. To close out April, Western will play at IUPUI on the 29th and 30th for a three-game matchup. 

The Leathernecks will faceoff against the Fort Wayne Mastodons on May 6-7 at Mary Ellen McKee to close out the regular season. The 2016 Summit League Championships are hosted by North Dakota State and are set for May 10-14 in Fargo, North Dakota.
