Leathernecks Conclude Midweek Series with Loss at Missouri State

Six different Leathernecks record a hit during Wednesday’s game

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Western Illinois scored three runs in the fourth inning to make it a two run game, but Missouri State scored 10 unanswered runs to pull away for a 15-3 win on Wednesday afternoon (March 16) at Hammons Field.

The 12th-ranked Bears (14-2 overall) loaded the bases in the first inning and used a two-out double to clear the bases for a 3-0 lead. With a runner at third, shortstop Chris Tschida made a diving catch in shallow center field for the final out of the first.

Hunter Steinmetz hit an inside the park solo home run to add to the lead in the second inning then Blake Graham added a RBI single in the third to make it 5-0.

Western (2-13) scored three in the fourth to cut the deficit. Colton Pogue hit a ground rule double to start the inning. Mark Garton singled to put runners on the corners, and he took second on a wild pitch. Conner Currier hit a sacrifice fly to score a run and Garton moved to third. Two pitches later, Garton beat out a rundown throw and slid under the tag at home to make it 5-2.

Cord Church walked during his at-bat then Adam McGinnis singled to put runners on the corners. McGinnis delayed stole second, and the throw from the catcher went into centefield allowing Church to score.

From there the Bears broke the game open scoring eight unanswered runs, including five during the sixth inning. Jake Burger hit two home runs, plating four of those eight runs, in that span.

Tschida, Roman Visintine, Pogue, Garton, Nathan Pollock and McGinnis all recorded a hit for Western. Jimmy Perkins (0-1) suffered the loss in his first collegiate start, giving up five runs on four hits in three innings. Jordan Pannell recorded two strikeouts in his two-thirds of an inning.

Jake Fromson (2-0) earned the win in relief with three scoreless innings. Burger finished with four hits, five runs scored and four RBI.
