Leathernecks Drop Series Opener at #12 Bears

Western concludes 15-game road trip on Wednesday

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Western Illinois fell behind early and eventually dropped a 13-4 decision at 12th-ranked Missouri State on Tuesday afternoon (March 15). The Bears improved to 13-2 overall while Western fell to 2-12.

Chris Tschida opened the game with a four-pitch walk, but from there sophomore right-hander Austin Knight retired 18 consecutive Leathernecks, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning.

The Bears loaded the bases with no one out in the first inning and plated two runs. Mark Garton started a 5-4-3 inning ending double play to get out of the jam and limit the damage.

MSU took advantage of three walks and two hits to score two more runs in the third inning. A 3-run homer highlighted a five-run fourth inning, then the Bears added four more runs in the fifth for a 13-0 lead.

Adam McGinnis opened the seventh with a double off the centerfield wall to break up the no-hitter. Two batters later he advanced to third on a single by Garton. Conner Currier ended Western's 20-inning scoreless streak with a RBI groundout. Nick Schrader followed with a single to advance Garton to third. When the centerfielder could not field the ball cleanly, Garton scored on the play to make it 13-2.

Ricky Digrugilliers in the seventh inning retired Missouri State in order, and in the eighth Robert Nunn also kept the Bears off the scoreboard with a scoreless inning of relief.

Roman Visintine delivered a pinch-hit single to start the ninth. Cord Church as a pinch-hitter drew a walk. Two straight wild pitches scored Visintine and moved Church to third. Aden Campbell brought Church home on a groundout for the final margin.

McGinnis' double was his third of the year. Michel (0-3) was charged with the loss allowing four runs on three hits in 2.1 innings.

Knight (1-0) gave up two runs on three hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out three. Five Bears finished with a multi-hit game, led by Jake Burger's four hits.

Western wraps up its two-game series, and 15 straight on the road to start the year, on Wednesday afternoon (March 16). First pitch against the Bears is scheduled for 3 p.m. The Leathernecks open their home schedule, and Summit League slate, this Friday (March 18) versus North Dakota State at 3 p.m.
