Leathernecks drop Summit League opener to Jaguars

QUINCY, Ill. – The Western Illinois opened up Summit League play on Saturday (Feb. 27) as the Purple and Gold played host to the IUPUI Jaguars. IUPUI got the best of the Leathernecks, taking a 7-0 decision inside the Quincy Racquet Club. Western falls to 0-8 overall and 0-1 in Summit League play while the Jags move to 3-13 (1-0).

"Our top doubles team began well in their match but IUPUI was able to earn the victory," said head coach Mashiska Washington. "Everyone in singles matched up against some strong competition and was able to earn some good match experience."

The Jags got on the board early in doubles play, sweeping all three matches. Western's top doubles team of Surya Sawhney and Jacob Sanders battled, but fell 6-2. WIU's other doubles pairings dropped 6-0 decisions.

In singles play IUPUI was able to take all six matches in straight sets. Sawhney (No. 1), Ross Smith (No. 2), Nolan Jones (No. 4) and Kerry Nozum (No. 5) each claimed games in their matches, but were defeated. Sanders and Christopher Nozum struggled to get anything going, dropping 6-0, 6-0 matches at the No. 3 and 6 positions.

Western returns to action on Saturday, March 5, as the Purple and Gold travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to face Oral Roberts. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
