Baseball Loses in Series Opener at SIU

Chris Tschida hits a RBI triple and Colan Borchers pitches two scoreless innings of relief

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Western Illinois made two late inning rally attempts at Southern Illinois, but the Leathernecks wound up dropping game one of the series 4-1 on Friday afternoon.

Preston Church gave up a leadoff triple in the bottom of the first but got two quick outs on a lineout and comebacker to the mound. On the dropped third strike, a throwing error down to first allowed the runner to reach and a run to score. Following a passed ball, a RBI single made it 2-0 Salukis. Southern (2-3 overall) doubled its lead in the fourth with a RBI double and later a run-scoring single.

During Western's half of the fourth inning, Nathan Pollock reached on a one-out error, but he was caught stealing for the final out of the frame. The Leathernecks (0-4) broke up the no-hitter in the seventh when Colton Pogue singled with one out. He was caught stealing, but back-to-back walks with two outs forced a pitching change. SIU got out of the jam on a fielder's choice.

In the eighth with two outs, pinch-hitter Erik Maki walked then eventually scored on Chris Tschida's second triple of the season. A hit batter and stolen base put two runners in scoring position, but Anthony Shimkus got a called third strike to get out of the inning.

SIU got a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the ninth from Ryan Netermeyer to close out the win.

"SIU's starter did a good job, he was effectively wild and our approach early wasn't where it's needs to be against a Friday starter. That got better as the game went on and we stung some balls at their defense," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "We were much cleaner defensively but still had one in the first that extended their inning. Chris Tschida and Colton Pogue continued to put quality at-bats together and our bench guys are doing a good job of giving us a spark late in games. Colan Borchers did what he does. He is great in that role because he pounds the zone and controls the running game. It was a great day to play and looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow."

Church (0-1) suffered the loss after he gave up four runs (two earned) on six hits. He fanned one and walked one in six innings. Borchers threw two scoreless innings, allowing one hit, one walk and striking out two.

Southern limited Western to the two hits. Connor Currier drew two of the team's five walks and Aden Campbell got hit by a pitch. Currier and pinch-runner Steve McShane both stole a base.

Joey Marciano (1-1) gave up one hit in 6.2 scoreless innings, striking out four and walking four. Church and Borchers scattered the seven SIU hits among seven different Salukis.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 27).
