Men's Tennis Falls to Dayton

Leathernecks opens Summit League play against IUPUI next time out

GALESBURG, Ill. –
The Western Illinois men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to Dayton Thursday (Feb. 25) afternoon in Galesburg as part of a doubleheader with the WIU women's tennis team. A battle at No. 2 doubles highlighted the action for Western Illinois who fell to 0-7 on the season while Dayton improved to 9-3.
 
"Our No. 2 doubles team had a very competitive start to our match today," said head coach Mashiska Washington. "We played against a tough team in Dayton and they were able to earn the victory."
 
The No. 2 doubles team of Nolan Jones and Ross Smith battled against the Dayton duo of Banjamin and Rollhauser to open the doubles portion of competition. It went down to the wire but the Flyers were able to escape with a 6-4 victory. Dayton swept the doubles point with 6-0 victories at the No. 1 and 3 positions.
 
In singles play it was all Dayton as the Flyers claimed all six matches. Kerry Nozum fell 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 5 position while his brother, Christopher, dropped a 6-0, 6-1 match at No. 6. Surya Sawhney and Smith each fell 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 and 2 spots, respectively. With the match in hand, the No. 3 and 4 matches were played as a single set to eight. Jones dropped his match, 8-0, at No. 3 and Jacob Sanders was narrowly edged, 8-7, at No. 4.
 
The Purple and Gold return to action on Saturday, February 27, as the Leathernecks play host to IUPUI to open Summit League play. First serve in Quincy is slated for 1:30 p.m.
