Leathernecks Split on Final Day of Total Control Sports Invitational

Western falls to Loyola, edges out UIC on Sunday

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Western Illinois softball team split a pair of games on the final day of the Total Control Sports Invitational Sunday (Feb. 21). The Leathernecks fell to Loyola by a score of 2-1 before bouncing back and shutting out UIC 1-0. With the decisions, Western moves to 3-6 on the season and finished the weekend 3-1.

"I was very excited with how our team came out this weekend after opening last weekend," said head coach Holly Van Vlymen. "We went back and worked on some things over the week and it really paid off. I was really happy with our mindset and the way that they approached the game offensively, defensively, and pitching wise."

Game One: Loyola 2, Western Illinois 1

Western got on the board first in the top of the third inning after Karissa Kouchis reached base for the eighth straight game. At the next at-bat, Tierney Bottino launched an RBI double to center field to score Kouchis and give the Leathernecks a 1-0 advantage.

The Ramblers tied things up at 1-1 in the bottom of the third after Hannah Jenkins hit a leadoff double and was eventually brought home by Erica Nagel.

The bats would go cold on both sides until the bottom of the fifth when Nagel hit a double and was brought home by Brooke Wilson during the next at bat, giving the Ramblers their first lead of the day.

The Leathernecks were unable to get their offense going throughout the remaining two innings and fell to Loyola by a score of 2-1. Emily Ira pitched a complete game, all seven innings, giving up seven runs and striking out four batters.

Game Two: Western Illinois 1, UIC 0

The Leathernecks had early chances to score against UIC, as Payton Abbott hit a ground-rule double in the top of the first and Taylor Messer hit a double to center in the top of the second, but both were left stranded.

In the top of the fourth, Abbott drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Kelsey Marlow hit an RBI single to right center that scored Abbott and gave the Leathernecks the 1-0 advantage at the end of the fourth inning.

UIC would threaten at the bottom of the sixth inning as they got two hits and a walk, but the Leatherneck defense worked its way out of the inning and the Flames would leave the bases loaded at the end of six.

In the seventh inning, Western got three quick outs to hold on and take the 1-0 victory. Kacyee Hart earned her second win of the weekend, striking out four batters and giving up five hits.

"I was really happy to see Kacyee finish out today and do really well with her pitching performance. Emily is doing a great job on the mound as well, I'm really happy with how they continue to progress since last weekend," added Van Vlymen. "We still have some more things that we need to work on and we're going to continue to get better at. We'll practice hard these next three days and be ready to go down to Auburn and win a couple more games."

The Purple and Gold travel to Auburn, Alabama, for the Tiger Invitational hosted by No. 3 Auburn. Western will take on St. John's on the opening day of the tournament at 3 p.m. Saturday's action will begin at 3 p.m. against Auburn, followed by Indiana State at 5:30. Action will conclude against Boston College on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
