Softball Drops Two on Second Day of the Tiger Invitational

Western unable to defeat No. 3 Auburn and Indiana State

AUBURN, Ala. – The Western Illinois softball team dropped decisions to No. 3 Auburn and Indiana State on Saturday (Feb. 27), on the second day of the Tiger Invitational. The Leathernecks fell to the Tigers 14-1 and the Sycamores 7-1 to drop to 3-9 on the season.

GAME ONE: AUBURN 14, WESTERN ILLINOIS 1

Auburn scored one run in the top of the first off a one-run double from Kasey Cooper. Western responded in the bottom of the first when Payton Abbott reached on a fielder's choice and then advanced to second on a throwing error. The next at bat, Aly Compton singled and sent Abbott to third base. As Holly Hoelting came up to bat, Auburn's pitcher was charged with an illegal pitch that then sent Compton home. At the end of the first inning, the score was tied at 1-1.

The Leathernecks kept it close, holding the No. 3 Tigers to just one run until the top of the third when they scored four runs to take a 4-1 lead. Karissa Kouchis looked to get Western going in the later half of the third inning when she hit her second base hit of the ball game, but she was left stranded.

It was all Auburn after that, as they scored eight runs in the fifth inning to move past the Leathernecks by a score of 14-1 in five innings. Kouchis led the team with two hits.

GAME TWO: INDIANA STATE 7, WESTERN ILLINOIS 1

Indiana State got on the board late in the first inning when Brooke Riemenschneid hit an RBI-double to left field. Western answered back following a single down the left field line from Nina Maggio in the bottom of the first. Hoelting reached first on a fielder's choice that sent Maggio down to third two at bats later. Abbott then hit a one-run single and Maggio scored, tying the game at 1-1 after one inning of play.

Both sides were even until the top of the fifth inning when the Sycamores took a 3-1 lead. Western was unable to respond, as Indiana State would score four runs in the top of the sixth to extend their lead and take the game by a score of 7-1.

Kouchis, Maggio, Taylor Messer and Rachel Beatty each had one hit apiece. Emily Ira made the start in the circle, pitching 5.2 innings. Freshman Megan Lotarski made her Leatherneck debut on the mound. She pitched 1.2 innings in relief, giving up one hit, one walk, a strikeout, and no earned runs.

The Purple and Gold will wrap up tournament play tomorrow morning (Feb. 28) at 10:30 a.m. against Boston College.
