Leathernecks Drop Two on Opening Day of Jayhawk Invitational

Western falls to Kansas, Kansas City

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Western Illinois softball team opened play at the Jayhawk Invitational on Friday (March 11). The Leathernecks dropped a contest to Kansas 8-0 before falling to Kansas City by a score of 7-2 to move to 6-13 on the season.
 
Game One: Kansas 8, Western Illinois 0
 
Kelsey Marlow was the first Leatherneck on base in the top of the second following a single to center field. Taylor Messer followed up with a two-out single to left field, but the two were left stranded at the end of the inning.
 
The Jayhawks got on the board first in the bottom of the second following a two-run double from Jessie Roane. In the bottom of the third, Kansas extended its lead to 5-0 following a three-run home run.
 
Western attempted to respond in the top of the fourth, as Aly Compton and Payton Abbott each hit singles but were eventually left stranded. 
 
The Jayhawks would go on to score one run in the bottom of the fifth and two in the bottom of the sixth to take the 8-0 victory in six innings.
 
Six different Leathernecks produced six hits, with Tierney Bottino reaching safely for the third straight game. Emily Ira got the start in the circle, pitching four innings with three strikeouts, one walk, six hits, and six earned runs. Brooke Stulga came in for relief for one inning, giving up three hits and two earned runs.
 
Game Two: Kansas City 7, Western Illinois 2
 
UMKC hit two home runs in the top of the first to take an early 3-0 lead.
 
Western responded in the top of the second after Holly Hoelting drew a walk. An at bat later, Nina Maggio launched a double to left field to advance Hoelting to third. Karissa Kouchis then reached first on an error and advanced to second, scoring Hoelting and Maggio and 
cutting the Leathernecks deficit to one run.

The 'Roos answered with another four runs in the bottom of the second to extend their lead to 7-2.
 
The bats were quiet on both ends for the remaining five innings. Kouchis worked to get a rally going in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff triple, but she was left stranded and the 'Roos took the game by a final score of 7-2.
 
Kacyee Hart got the start and pitched 2/3 of an inning to bring in Stulga for relief for one inning. Ira came in to pitch four innings, striking out four and allowing five hits and no earned runs.
 
The Purple and Gold has a rematch against Kansas tomorrow (March 12) for day two of the Jayhawk Invitational at 11:30 a.m.
