Leathernecks Drop Final Two Games of the Jayhawk Invitational

Western falls to UNI and UMKC Sunday

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Western Illinois softball team took on Northern Iowa and Kansas City during the final day of the Jayhawk Invitational on Sunday (March 13). The Leathernecks dropped the first game to UNI by a score of 4-0. In the second game against UMKC, Western out hit the Panthers 10-to-8 and scored three runs in the seventh inning, but it was not enough and they fell by a score of 7-4. With the losses, the Leathernecks fall to 6-16 on the year.

GAME ONE: Northern Iowa 4, Western Illinois 0

UNI scored early in the top half of the first following a sacrifice RBI from Caitlin Wnek to give the Panthers a 1-0 advantage.

The Leathernecks had opportunities to even the score throughout the game. The first came in the bottom of the second when Payton Abbott launched a double to left field and then advanced to third on a passed ball. Juniors Holly Hoelting and Taylor Messer then drew back-to-back walks to force a Panther pitching change. However, at the end of the inning the trio was stranded.

In the bottom of the sixth, Western looked to threaten UNI's lead when Kelsey Marlow hit a single up the middle then moved to second following a sacrifice bunt from Abbott at the next at bat. Messer then drew her second walk of the morning, but the rally fell short when the two were left on base at the end of the inning.

An RBI single and a two-run home run sealed the victory for the Panthers in the top of the seventh as they went on to win 4-0.

Emily Ira got the start and pitched a complete seven innings, giving up five hits, three earned runs, and striking out four batters.

GAME TWO: Kansas City 7, Western Illinois 4

The 'Roos got on the board first in the bottom half of the first inning following a two-run home run from Katie Kelley.

Western's bats got going in the top of the third when Rachel Beatty bunted safely and reached first. The next at bat, junior Amanda Manton hit her first base hit as a Leatherneck, sending Beatty to second. Kouchis then singled up the middle for the fifth straight game to load the bases, but at the end of the inning the Leathernecks were left on base.

UMKC extended its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third before adding four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-0 lead.

WIU's potential comeback began in the bottom of the fifth when Beatty hit her second hit of the game and advanced to second on a throwing error and third on a wild pitch. An at bat later, Tierney Bottino hit an infield base hit, her second of the game, to score Beatty and put Western on the board. At the end of five innings, UMKC led 7-1.

Brooke Stulga came in for Kacyee Hart on relief and shut the UMKC offense down for the remainder of the afternoon, pitching two innings and allowing one walk and no hits.

The Leathernecks seventh inning rally got started when Nina Maggio launched a double to left field. After Manton walked, Kouchis singled up the left field line to load the bases for Bottino, who walked and scored Maggio. The next at bat brought up redshirt freshman Erin Rossetto who made her Leatherneck debut a memorable one when she smacked the ball to the shortstop for a one-run single. Marlow added to the rally with an RBI single up the middle to score Kouchis and cut Western's deficit to three. The 'Roos would make a pitching change and were able to get out of the inning, as the Leathernecks comeback fell short and UMKC hung on to win 7-4.

Bottino led the team with two RBIs and two hits, while Kouchis and Beatty also collected two hits apiece. Hart got the start and gave up eight hits and seven earned runs, while striking out two batters.

The Purple and Gold are currently on a ten-day, twelve-game road trip with action continuing Tuesday at Wichita State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
