Softball Overcomes Six Run Deficit, Tops Bowling Green 9-8

Kelsey Marlow and Aly Compton each have career days at the plate

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Western Illinois softball team overcame a six run deficit to defeat Bowling Green State by a score of 9-8 on the first day of the Hoosier Classic on Friday (March 18). With the win, the Leathernecks move to 7-19 on the season, while the Falcons fall to 11-13.

Kelsey Marlow got the Leathernecks on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run to left field, the first of her career. Aly Compton then hit a two-out single and advanced to third on an error. Compton was brought home in the next at bat when Payton Abbott hit a single to shortstop. At the end of one inning of play, Western held a 2-0 lead.

Bowling Green made things interesting in the top of the second. After the Falcons loaded the bases, Molly Holliday singled and eventually worked her way home on two Leatherneck throwing errors as four runs scored in the process. With two innings in the books, BGSU had the 4-2 edge.

The Falcons would add two more runs in the third and fifth innings pull ahead 8-2 at the end of the top half of the fifth inning.

Western's comeback began in the bottom of the fifth inning when Rachel Beatty launched a double to center field. One batter later, Tierney Bottino came up to the plate and hit a run-scoring double to plate Beatty. Marlow continued the Leathernecks' rally with an RBI double that shortened the Falcons' lead to 8-4. Compton then stepped up to the plate and hit her first career home run, a two-run shot to left field to score Marlow. With five innings in the books, the Leathernecks had cut their deficit to two runs, 8-6.

In the bottom of the seventh, Marlow, Abbott and Maggio drew three consecutive walks to load the bases with no outs. Junior Taylor Messer was then hit by a pitch and Marlow scored. With the bases loaded and two outs, Beatty hit a routine fly ball to right field that was bobbled and then dropped by the Falcons' right fielder. Maggio and Messer would score on the error and the Leathernecks went on to win the game by a score of 9-8.

Fielding errors troubled both sides as each team committed four. For the Leathernecks, Marlow and Compton led the team with two hits, two RBIs and one home run apiece. The two also teamed up to score five of the team's nine runs.

Abbott came in in the top of the fifth inning for relief of starting pitcher Brooke Stulga. En route to her first career win, Abbott pitched a career high three innings and struck out three batters while limiting the Falcon offense to one hit. In addition to her solid play from the circle, Abbott collected two hits, one RBI and a walk from the batter's box.

The Purple and Gold look to continue their winning ways Saturday (March 19) on the second day of the 2016 Hoosier Classic. The Leathernecks will take on invitational hosts Indiana with the first pitch slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. CT.
