Men's Tennis Drops Dual at Valparaiso

Leathernecks continue road swing with double dual Saturday

VALPARAISO, Ind. –
The Western Illinois men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to Valparaiso on Friday (Feb. 19) afternoon at The Courts of NWI. Western falls to 0-4 on the season while the Crusaders improve to 5-4 with the decision.
 
"Today was the best we have competed this spring," said head coach Mashiska Washington. "Ross (Smith) had a very strong second set with his opponent. Overall, Valparaiso was able to earn the victory."
 
Valparaiso jumped out of the gate, sweeping the doubles point. Surya Sawhney and Jacob Sanders fell 6-1 at the No. 1 spot while the duos of Ross Smith/Nolan Jones and Kerry Nozum/Christopher Nozum fell 6-0 at the No. 2 and 3 spots, respectively.
 
In singles action, it was a sweep for Valpo, who claimed all six matches in straight sets. After dropping the first set of his No. 2 singles match, Smith battled back in the second set before ultimate falling 6-4. In the No. 1 position, Sawhney fell 6-2, 6-1. Sanders (No. 3), Jones (No. 4), and Kerry Nozum (No. 5) all fell 6-1, 6-0, while Christopher Nozum dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 6.
 
Western stays on the road for a double dual on Saturday, February 20. The Leathernecks play a neutral site contest against SIU-Edwardsville in DeKalb, Illinois, at 9 a.m. before remaining in town to face Northern Illinois at 6 p.m.
