Bison Top Leathernecks in Fargo Wednesday

Garret Covington tallied 21 points, including five 3-pointers, and pulled down six rebounds

FARGO, N.D. –
Western Illinois was unable to overcome its early deficit Wednesday evening (Feb. 17) in men's basketball action as the North Dakota State Bison grabbed a 63-54 Summit League victory over the Leathernecks in Fargo.
 
NDSU improved to 17-10 overall and 7-6 in league play with the win, and WIU dropped to 9-15 on the year and 2-11 in league action.
 
Western scored the first two points of the game thanks to a J.C. Fuller jumper, but the Bison answered and jumped out to a 10-point lead, 15-5, 10 minutes into the game.
 
The remainder of the first half saw WIU gradually chip away at its deficit, getting within one point with under three minutes to go in the first, and eventually trailing by only four points, 31-27, at halftime.
 
NDSU again jumped out to a double figure lead, 48-35, seven minutes into the second half. The Leathernecks were able to get within six points with roughly with just over two minutes to play, but NDSU picked up its seventh league win of the season.
 
Garret Covington finished with a team-high 21 points, the ninth time the junior from Edwardsville, Ill. has scored 20-plus points this season. He shot 7-of-13 from the field and 5-of-10 from long range. He also grabbed six rebounds, which tied for the team lead.
 
Fuller (11 points) and Tate Stensgaard (10 points) were the other two Leathernecks to score in double figures, and were also the other two players to share the team lead in rebounds with six.
 
Junior guard Jabari Sandifer added eight points and dished out a team-best four assists.
 
Kory Brown scored a team-high 15 points for the Bison, and A.J. Jacobson and Dexter Werner added 14 and 12 points, respectively.
 
WIU had more assists than NDSU (9-7), but also had more turnovers (14-10).
 
The two teams shot nearly the same percentages from all areas of the basketball court. Western edged NDSU from the floor (42.9 percent – 42.6), the Bison edged WIU from the free throw line (70.8 percent – 70.6), and both teams shot 42.9 percent from long range (6-of-14).
 
Western Illinois has three regular season games left this season, all at home. The Leathernecks and Jackrabbits kick-off the home stand Saturday, Feb. 20, with tipoff scheduled for 2 p.m. inside Western Hall.
 
Fans are encouraged to "wear purple proudly" as the game has been tabbed a 'Purple Out'.
