Leathernecks Grab Second Straight League Win at Denver

Senior Jalen Chapman scored a career-high 26 points in WIU’s victory

COACH WRIGHT POSTGAME INTERVIEW

DENVER – Western Illinois picked up its second consecutive Summit League victory Thursday evening (Feb. 11) at Denver, dropping the Pioneers 63-60 behind a career performance from senior forward Jalen Chapman.

The Bronx, N.Y. native finished with a career-high 26 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field, and connecting on 8 of his 12 free throw attempts. He also grabbed five rebounds, and tallied three steals and two blocks, both team bests.

The Leathernecks improved to 2-9 in league play and 9-13 overall with the win, while Denver dropped to 5-7 in league action and 13-12 overall on the season.

WIU quickly jumped out to a seven-point lead less than eight minutes into the contest. DU quickly responded with an 11-2 run and grabbed its first advantage of the game, 19-17, with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half.

The Leathernecks used the end of first and beginning of the second to build a 12-point lead, 47-35, with 14:58 to play in regulation. Denver, however, would storm back and eventually retake the lead again about eight minutes later, 51-50. The two teams would then go back-and-forth until the 3:43 mark when the game was tied at 58-all.

Free throws from junior Garret Covington and a layup from Chapman put WIU up four, and although Denver would cut its deficit to two points with less than a minute to play, the Leathernecks were able to hold off the Pioneers for their second straight win, and third road win of the season.

Besides Chapman, Covington (11) and senior Tate Stengaard (10) also scored in double figures. Stensgaard and Covington led the team in rebounds with six each.

Junior guard Jabari Sandifer finished with a team-best four assists. Freshman Delo Bruster, who started his first career game, and senior J.C. Fuller each added three helpers.

Marcus Byrd and Nate Engesser recorded 18 points and 15 points, respectively, to lead Denver.

WIU outrebounded Denver 33-20, and only allowed the Pioneers to grab one offensive rebound.

The Leathernecks will look to extend their win streak Saturday evening at Oral Roberts. The two teams are slated to tipoff at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
