Leathernecks Fall To Milwaukee Despite Second Half Run

Morgan Blumer led Western Illinois with her first-career double-double.

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — A trio of Leatherneck players reached double-digit scoring in the Leathernecks' 76-68 road loss at Milwaukee in their second regular season game.

"We were down 20 and were able to come back in the first half and get some some runs," said head coach JD Gravina. "We were too passive in the first half and we were trying to solve their defense instead of spacing and attacking them, that is what we do best."

Western Illinois opened on a 7-0 run - beginning with a pair of free throws from Emily Clemens following a pre-game Milwaukee technical foul. Following the free throws, Michelle Farrow buried a corner three after the tip, and then Taylor Higginbotham went coast-to-coast on a steal for a fast break layup.

The Panthers answered with a 12-0 run heading into the first media timeout. Milwaukee then increased its run to 20-0 over a four-minute span, increasing the lead to 24-13 at the end of the quarter.

Milwaukee increased its lead to 20 after Sierra Ford-Washington hit an open shot from beyond the arc. After a four minute scoring drought, Western Illinois was able snap it after Olivia Kaufmann banked in a long three pointer. After the Leathernecks were able to force a turnover, Morgan Blumer got a three-point play with 2:45 left until halftime.

A 10-0 run over final 2:28 in the second quarter was capped off by Mallory Boyle finding Taylor Hanneman in transition for an easy layup, cutting the Panthers' lead to 11 at the half.

Western Illinois sparked a 9-0 run to open the second half, after Clemens dribbled through the Panthers' press and found Farrow, who connected with Higginbotham for a three. WIU eventually cut its deficit to just two points with 6:15 to go in the third. Both teams traded baskets until the 4:29 media timeout, when Blumer hit her third three pointer. Milwaukee sparked a 6-0 run, forcing a WIU timeout late in the third.

The Panthers went on an 11-0 run, but Higginbotham was able to answer with a turnaround jumper at the end of the third quarter, trailing 54-43. WIU was able to cut Milwaukee's lead to seven after Clemens drained a three-pointer in transition with just under six minutes to go, but the Panthers answered with an and-1 to close out the eight point win.

Morgan Blumer had a career-high 17 points and 12 rebounds, recording her first career double-double. Emily Clemens scored a team-high 19 points, while Olivia Braun added her career high of 11 points.

Milwaukee was led by the duo of Jenny Lindner and Steph Kostowicz. Lindner had a game-high 23 points and eight rebounds, while Kostowicz recorded 20 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.

Western Illinois (1-1) hits the road for an 11 a.m. tip at Southeast Missouri State Wednesday, Nov. 16.

"That'll be another tough one," said Gravina. "We have a tough stretch with six out of our next seven on the road so we're going to have to be ready."
