Blumer's Career-High 30 Points Lifts WIU Over SEMO

Western Illinois picked up a 100-87 win at SEMO.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Behind a career-high 30 points from junior Morgan Blumer, the Western Illinois women's basketball team picked up a 100-87 win over Southeast Missouri State Wednesday (Nov. 16).

"It was a fun game, because both teams were shooting the ball really well. We shot the lights out today. We hardly took any bad shots and I think we only forced the shot on three possessions. Our strength is through our versatility and playing team basketball," said head coach JD Gravina. "We really defended the way we wanted to, and I also thought we did a great job of rebounding the ball, with 26 defensive rebounds."

Blumer set a new career-high in points (30), 3-point field goals made (5) and was 11-for-16 from the field.

"I looked at our staff after the game and said that I knew she [Blumer] would be the player we thought she would be," said Gravina. "It's great to see her be that player. Our team did a great job. We talk about having to be road warriors, and we were able to prove it today, because every single game will be tough over this stretch."

The junior got off to a hot start in the first quarter, draining a trio of 3-pointers.

The lead increased to 10 for the Leathernecks after Emily Clemens dished the ball to Michelle Farrow, for an easy layup. After one quarter of play, the Leathernecks led by four.

Both teams traded baskets to start the second quarter. SEMO cut the Leathernecks' lead to 34-30 after an and-1 by Bri Mitchell. Western Illinois responded with an 11-3 run that was sparked by a Taylor Hanneman, who set a new career-high five three point shots within a single quarter.

That was capped off by a buried three from Clemens, which gave the Purple and Gold a 51-37 lead, forcing a SEMO timeout.

A Jasmine Patrick and-1, followed by another Clemens fast-break bucket gave Western a 15 point lead—it's largest lead of the half—before the Redhawks hit a three as time expired. The Leathernecks went into the locker room making 12 combined 3-pointers, and led 55-43 at halftime.

Western Illinois maintained a 61-43 lead after Blumer was able to go baseline on her defender for the bucket. Western then responded to a 7-0 SEMO run, with a pair of free throws by Blumer, followed by an and-1 from Patrick with just over three minutes remaining in the quarter. The Redhawks cut the game to single digits, but Blumer answered with another long three as the clock winded down.

With under nine minutes to play, Western held on to an 83-71 lead. Western had back-to-back scores when Patrick lobbed a perfect pass into Blumer, followed by a turnaround jumper from Hanneman to put WIU up 87-73 with 6:54 to go.

Farrow increased WIU's lead by 16 after knocking down her third 3-pointer. The Purple and Gold eventually reached 100 points to seal the 13-point win.
Behind Blumer's 30 points, Clemens recorded 20 points 12 assists and five rebounds, while Hanneman and Farrow added 19 and 13 respectively.

Western Illinois returns home Saturday (Nov. 19) to play host to Northern Illinois. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. (CT) on ESPN3.
