Western Illinois Swept by Denver

Leathernecks fall in straight sets to the Pioneers

MACOMB, Ill. – For the second time this season, the Western Illinois volleyball team was unable to top Denver in Summit League play, as the Leathernecks played host to the Pioneers Sunday afternoon (Oct. 23) and fell in straight sets. The loss moves Western to 4-22 on the season and 1-9 in league play. Denver improves to 16-6 overall (8-2).

"We competed all week in practice. We had a very good, competitive, week of preparation and we got into a game and got timid," said Kelly Richardson. "That's semi to be expected out of such a young group. However, they are more than capable of being competitive and everyone knows that. They just need to have that confidence and be competitive as we finish out this last round of conference play."

Denver used a 6-0 run to get ahead 14-6 in the first set. The Leathernecks began to find their groove following two kills from Claire Grove and one from Melanie Patenaude. However, the Pioneers were able to score six unanswered points to end the set and took a 25-12 victory.

The Leathernecks put up a competitive fight in the second set, as a 3-0 run highlighted by kills from Riley Schumacher and Kaili Simmons tied the set at 8-8. Two Pioneer errors helped the Leathernecks to their first lead of the day, 12-11. After Denver put up four straight points to lead 20-14, Western used a 4-2 run to keep things close at 22-19. Patenaude hammered down consecutive kills to put Western within one, 23-22. Lexi Kolschefski looked to keep WIU alive with a kill of her own, but Denver was able to hang on and find the set point to win 25-23.

Both sides exchanged points in the beginning portion of the third set. With the help of two kills from Grove, Western stayed within one point 5-4. Denver then pulled away with a 16-9 lead before going on a 7-0 run that the Leathernecks couldn't respond to as Denver took the final set 25-12.

Grove led the team with five kills and 10 digs. In her first career start, Makenzie Bouse led the team in assists (11) for the second straight match. Riley Schumacher contributed on the defensive front with two solo blocks, tying her career-high.

The Purple and Gold now travel to the Dakotas for a pair of league matches, beginning with North Dakota State on Oct. 28 before playing at South Dakota on Oct. 29.
