Volleyball Defeated by North Dakota State

Leathernecks now travel to USD for a match tomorrow evening

FARGO, N.D. – The Western Illinois volleyball team took on North Dakota State Friday evening (Oct. 28) in Fargo. The Leathernecks were unable to defeat the Bison, falling in straight sets to drop to 4-23 on the year (1-10 Summit League). NDSU improves to 6-4 in league play and 8-16 overall.

The Bison got out to a fast start in the opening set with a 5-0 lead. Western got on the board following consecutive kills from Claire Grove and Melanie Patenaude. However, the Leathernecks struggled to find their footing as NDSU led by as many as seven in the opening set. The Bison were able to use a 3-1 run towards the end of the set to seal the 25-14 victory.

Western kept things close in the second set. Aleezah Washington came down with a kill to put the Leathernecks within one, 7-6. Trailing 11-8, Patenaude had a kill that sparked a 5-0 run to give WIU its first lead of the evening at 12-11. The Bison did not let Western get too close after that though, as an 8-0 run put North Dakota State ahead for good. Patenaude and Grove tried to keep the Leathernecks alive towards the end of the set, but a Bison kill gave NDSU a 25-17 win in set two.

With the score tied 4-4 in the third frame, the Bison moved ahead 9-4 following five straight points. Western then responded with a 5-0 run of their own started by a kill from Washington, ace from Kate Hickey, kill from Riley Schumacher and two more kills from Patenaude to tie the set 9-9. The set stayed tied until NDSU used a 9-1 run to lead 21-14. The Leathernecks could not respond, as they fell 25-15 in the third set.

Patenaude led Western offensively with eight kills. Makenzie Bouse dished out a career-high 15 assists while Kaili Simmons added 19 digs.

The Leathernecks have a quick turnaround, as they travel to South Dakota for a match tomorrow evening (Oct. 29). First serve is set for 6 p.m.
