Volleyball Downed by South Dakota

Western hosts Oral Roberts this Tuesday at 5 p.m.

MACOMB, Ill. – Despite pushing the second set to extra points, the Western Illinois volleyball team could not overcome South Dakota Saturday evening (Oct. 29) as they fell by a score of 3-0. The loss drops Western to 4-24 on the year and 1-11 in Summit League play. The Coyotes improve to 21-4 on the year with a 10-1 league mark.

"We've been talking a lot the last two weeks about competing and fighting regardless of the circumstance," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "We saw a really gutsy fight tonight out of our kids in set two. We need to continue finding ways to be mentally tough enough to do that through three sets. That mental piece will continue being a focus in our gym this week."

The Coyotes opened up a 10-2 lead in the opening set that Western could not dwindle as they fell 25-10.

Both sides exchanged points during the opening portion of the second set, with USD holding the slight advantage. Down 14-9, a kill by Riley Schumacher and a service ace from Kaili Simmons cut the deficit to three. Claire Grove then had two kills in a row to cut the deficit to two.

South Dakota would pull back ahead to lead 20-17 when Aleezah Washington came down with a kill to spark the Leatherneck offense. Back-to-back kills from Melanie Patenaude and Grove put Western within two and forced a Coyote timeout. Following the break, a 3-0 WIU run comprised of a kill from Schumacher and two USD errors tied the set at 22-22. Two more Coyote errors gave Western the 24-23 advantage and forced another USD timeout. However, South Dakota was able to score three quick points to hold on for the 26-24 second set victory.

Western kept things close in the pivotal third set until USD used a 4-0 run to lead 12-6. A 4-0 Coyote run later in the frame gave them a 19-9 advantage that Western could not come back from. South Dakota would go on to claim set three 25-12 and the match 3-0.

Patenaude led Western with eight kills, followed by Grove who contributed six. Patenaude also had 13 digs on the night while Simmons had 17. Makenzie Bouse dished out a career-high 19 assists.

Western shifts its focus to Oral Roberts, who they host Tuesday night (Nov. 1) at 5 p.m. inside Western Hall.
