MACOMB, Ill. –
The Western Illinois volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Oral Roberts at home Tuesday evening (Nov. 1). With the loss, the Leathernecks fall to 4-25 on the season (1-12 Summit League), while the Golden Eagles improve to 14-12 overall and 6-6 in league play.

"We continue to see moments of the consistency that we are talking about, it's just stringing it together for more than a couple points," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "I think that we are struggling here at home to step out with the confidence that we see sometimes on the road. That's some of our youth and getting over that, but all-in-all we have to be more mentally tough."

It was all Oral Roberts in the opening set as they used a 15-3 run to propel them to a 25-8 victory.

Western led 5-4 in the second set before the teams exchanged 3-0 runs that then gave the Leathernecks an 8-7 lead. Another 3-0 run by WIU that was highlighted by a kill from Riley Schumacher put them up 12-10. ORU then began to pull away with a 6-2 run to give themselves a 17-14 lead. Trailing 24-17, Schumacher came up with a kill to try and spark Western's offense, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Eagles claimed set two 25-18.

Western trailed 10-5 in the third set before three ORU errors put them within two at 10-8. Down 15-11, back-to-back aces from Melanie Patenaude put Western back within one, 16-14. Western's offense came alive following consecutive kills from Schumacher and Shalyn Greenhaw to give WIU a one-point lead. The sides would exchange points until ORU used a 6-0 run to close out the set 25-19.

Patenaude led the team with six kills, hitting .286 on the night, while adding eight digs. As a team, Western had ten total blocks and was led by Emilee Dechant, who had three. Kaili Simmons led the team with 13 digs.

The Purple and Gold head out on their last road trip of the season to South Dakota State on Saturday (Nov. 5). Western closes out the season at home with matches against IUPUI (Nov. 11) and Omaha (Nov. 12) for Senior Day.
