Men's Soccer Falls 2-1 To Omaha At Home

The Leathernecks fall to 2-2 in Summit League play.

MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois men's soccer program dropped a 2-1 contest against the Omaha Mavericks in Summit League play on Saturday, Oct. 22 at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.

The match saw all three of its goals scored in the first half.

"It was a hard fought match in college soccer that was physical with both teams wanting to win," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "We just lost our way for a couple of minutes and that's where our focus has to be better. We gave them those restarts and didn't perform well inside the penalty area. There were good opportunities for Omaha and they took the momentum away from us. The first half was interesting and I thought we cleared our minds and played in the second half, but just we just couldn't connect with a goal."

Western Illinois (6-7-1, 2-2) struck first in the ninth minute after Jacob Bevan shot the ball inside the box—which was deflected by the keeper—and scored off the rebound.

Omaha, however, was able to respond in the 28th minute after Emmanuel Hamzat scored off a header from a 20-yard free kick by Fazlo Alihodzic .

The Mavericks were able to find the back of the net again in the 36th minute off another header, this time when Hamzat kicked the ball from the right side of the field to connect with Elvir Ibisevic for the goal.

After trailing 2-1 at the end of the first half, the Leathernecks were unable to get the equalizer for the remaining 45 minutes in the match.

Despite falling in the match, Western Illinois outshot the Mavericks 16-6. Both sides recorded five shots on goal, with the Mavericks recording eight corner kicks to the Purple and Gold's five.

Individually, Bevan recorded his eighth goal of the season, and six shots (three on goal). Daniel Collins, Antonio Aguilar, Alejandro Pacheco and Fernando Pacheco each finished with two shots.

In net, goalkeeper Tim Hansen finished with two saves.

Western Illinois hits road for a pair of matches next week, beginning with Wisconsin on Oct.  25 and followed by a Summit League match at Eastern Illinois on Oct. 29.

"We go on the road at Wisconsin, so hopefully that's a good chance for us to work some of those kinks out tactically speaking, and then we'll have to throw everything at Eastern Illinois," said Johnson. "The Summit League matches always come down to the last game. We don't have to rely on any other teams, so we just need to win these remaining league matches."
