Leathernecks Drop Road Match At No. 24 Wisconsin

WIU falls to 6-8-1 overall.

MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois men's soccer program dropped a 3-1 contest against Wisconsin on the road in a non-league matchup Tuesday (Oct. 25).

Wisconsin got on the board quickly in the fourth minute to go up 1-0. The Badgers slotted the ball from the end line to find the back of the net off a setup of two assists.

The Badgers then went up 2-0 in the 16th minute when Tom Barlow scored off a header from a cross, which was once again off double assists.

The third and final Wisconsin goal came in the 29th minute, when Mike Catalano scored off a third straight two-assist setup in the first half.

Wisconsin would not score in the second half, as the Leathernecks were able to get back some of their momentum with a 48th minute goal by Adam Novak—his first of the season—who was able to finish the ball after Fernando Pacheco lofted the ball inside the penalty area for an assist.

"Our team was asleep from the kick off and paid dearly for that in the first half," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "In the second half, we regrouped and played a lot better, but it was too little too late. Wisconsin is a good team and took advantage of our inability to show up for the game."

Overall, WIU was outshot 9-7 by the Badgers, who also had a 6-4 shot-on-goal advantage. Western Illinois held a 5-3 decision in corner kicks.

Ben Fiddes led the team with two shots, while Novak contributed one shot, which would be the 48th minute goal. In net, Tim Hansen recorded three saves.

WIU returns to the road Saturday (Oct. 29) for a Summit League matchup against Eastern Illinois. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CT).
