Western Illinois Falls 2-0 At Eastern Illinois

The Leathernecks fall to 2-3 overall in Summit League play.

CHARLESTON, Ill.- The Fighting Leatherneck men's soccer program dropped a 2-0 decision at Eastern Illinois in Summit League action Saturday, Oct. 29.

Western Illinois fell into a 1-0 deficit in the 10th minute when EIU's Alex Castaneda shot the ball from the left side of the field and across the box into the net.

The Panthers' second goal came off an assist from Tyler Enright, who crossed the ball from the right side onto the foot of Marcus Menniti, who was able to score in the 23rd minute.

"We had two early mistakes that led to a two goal lead. We were in too much of a hole," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "We created some great chances but didn't finish them off, so we'll need to regroup for Drake and Fort Wayne."

WIU saw opportunities in the first half, as Jacob Bevan's shot hit the post in the 17th minute. The Leathernecks also had three other shots that were saved within the first 15 minutes of the match.

The two-goal halftime deficit would be too much of a hole for Western, as the Panthers were able to hold on for the second half to close out the win.

Western Illinois out-shot the Panthers 9-4, with a 6-4 shot-on-goal advantage. WIU also had an 11-6 advantage on corner kicks. Armel Kouassi had five shots (four on goal) in the match, followed by Jacob Bevan (three shots, one on goal) and Alejandro Pacheco (one shot, one on goal).

Goalkeeper Tim Hansen had two saves in 90 minutes of action.

The Leathernecks (6-9-1, 2-3) return to the pitch next Tuesday, Nov. 1 in Des Moines, Iowa to take on Drake in their final non-league match of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Western then returns home for Senior Day Saturday, Nov. 5 against Fort Wayne at 11 a.m. in Summit League play to close out the regular season.
