Leathernecks Defeat Drake 2-1 On The Road

Western Illinois notched a non-league win over the Bulldogs.

DES MOINES, Iowa - A 2-1 win at Drake capped off the non-league regular season for the Western Illinois Fighting Leatherneck men's soccer program on Tuesday night (Nov. 1).

The Leathernecks found goals off the feet of Daniel Collins and Alejandro Pacheco to secure their seventh win of the season.

"We had good energy tonight and as a group we really competed well," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "Our back line was good at both ends the entire night. Drake really pushed forward after we went ahead, but we were able to grind it out for the win."

In the 16th minute, Western found momentum in the match after Jacob Bevan slotted the ball across the box to fellow senior Collins, who drove the ball into the back of the net.

Just two minutes later, the Bulldogs tied it up at 1-1 a piece with an equalizer by James Wypych, who scored off a deflection high into the air where he was there for the follow-up shot.

Both teams would go into halftime tied following the first-half goals.

The Leathernecks eventually found the goal they needed from Pacheco in the 77th minute, after the junior buried a shot from 20 yards out after a short corner kick. Western Illinois was eventually able to hold on for its second road win of the regular season.

In the match, both Collins (two shots on goal) and Pacheco (one shot on goal) led the team in scoring, followed by Jacob Bevan with an assist and one shot. In net, Tim Hansen recorded five saves in the 90 minutes of play.

Western Illinois return to the pitch this Saturday (Nov. 5) at 11 a.m. for its final regular season and Summit League match of the 2016 season against Fort Wayne. The match will also mark Senior Day, as Leatherneck seniors will be honored that day.
