MACOMB, Ill
. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team earned a 1-0 Summit League win over the Omaha Mavericks Sunday, Oct. 16 at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.

A goal by Ashley Kuhlmann—her second of the season—was all the Leathernecks needed to secure the victory.

Early in the first half, Western saw a scoring opportunity, as Alexandra Siavelis' shot connected with the crossbar as the ball fell in front of the line in the fifth minute.

From there, Western was able to stay on the attack and finally rewards itself as Kuhlmann received a through ball from Madeline Edwards inside the box to connect for the 17th minute goal.

"It was a good run and a good pass. We've been trying to develop that play with the through ball to the center back all year, and it paid off today," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "Sometimes when you hit the woodwork it can be difficult to get more opportunities, but we were able to come back and score."

The Mavericks had a chance to tie it up in the 40th minute, having a shot hit the crossbar as well, followed by a shot blocked seconds later.

In the second half, the Leathernecks almost saw an equalizer goal from Omaha, as another Maverick shot nailed the crossbar in the 52nd minute. The Leathernecks were able to take a defensive stand, however, and hold off the Mavericks for their second Summit League win of the season.

"Huge credit to our backline and Jennifer [Currie] for not allowing a goal, and our midfield for running today," said Johnson. "The stuff we talked about was closing out their forwards so they couldn't turn and face us, because they were a good team at dribbling the ball. I thought we did a nice job of closing down their wings and not letting them turn."

Kuhlmann led the way with three shots (two on goal) and her first goal of the season, followed by Madeline Edwards with an assist and three shots (one on goal). Emily Bollman also had two shots (one on goal), along with Siavelis, who also registered a pair of shots.

In goal, Jennifer Currie recorded a pair of saves in the 90 minutes.

The Leathernecks outshot Omaha 12-11 with a 5-2 shot-on-goal advantage. The Purple and Gold also had four corner kicks to the Mavericks' three.

"It was a great win for our ladies that maybe puts us in position to qualify for the tournament, but there's three left and we need to get some wins in that stretch," said Johnson.

Western Illinois returns to action Friday, Oct. 21 on the road at Fort Wayne for a Summit League match. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
