Western Illinois Falls at No. 5 Denver

The Leathernecks dropped a 2-0 contest at the Pioneers.

DENVER, Colo. – The Western Illinois men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 Summit League contest on the road to the No. 5 Denver Pioneers on Saturday (Oct. 15).

The Leathernecks (6-6-1) fall to 2-1 overall in Summit League play, while the Pioneers (12-0-2) improve to a 4-0 mark atop the league standings.

"Denver is a good team who is very fit and  mobile up top with good speed," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "We did  very well limiting their opportunities but we were a bit unlucky on the penalty kick, from which they scored. We hope to have the chance to play them again."

Western Illinois fell into a 1-0 deficit in the 23rd minute, with the first Pioneer goal coming off a penalty kick goal from Karstin Hanlin. After back-to-back Pioneer shots shortly after the goal, Western's Daniel Collins recorded the first Leatherneck shot of the match, which was saved by the keeper.

Just before the half, Ben Fiddes saw his shot go wide left, as the Leathernecks trailed by one after the first 45 minutes.

The second Denver goal wouldn't come until the 83rd minute off a header by Alex Underwood off a cross from 30 yards out, capping it off with a goal inside the box.

From there, Western was unable to dig itself out of the two-goal deficit in the final seven minutes, resulting in its first Summit League defeat.

Fernando Pacheco, Fiddes Collins and Maclean Johnson all recorded a shot, with Collins recording the only shot on goal for in the match. The Pioneers totaled 12 shots with four on goal throughout both periods.

In net, goalkeeper Tim Hansen finished with two saves in the full 90 minutes of play.

The Purple and Gold will have a week off before returning to the pitch next Saturday, Oct. 22 at home against Omaha. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CT).
