Western Falls to Duke to Finish Kansas Invitational Play

Sierra Bauder named to All-Tournament Team

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Western Illinois volleyball team wrapped up play at the Kansas Invitational on Saturday, September 5, as the Leathernecks took on Duke. WIU was not able to take down the Blue Devils, dropping a 3-0 decision to move to 0-6 on the year. Freshman Sierra Bauder was named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts over the three matches.

"We saw some good things this morning, including better communication and attention to details," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "We still have to work on bettering our consistency, especially throughout longer rallies. We see the pieces coming together, though, and look forward to getting back into the gym Monday to prepare for Saint Louis. This weekend was a great opportunity to improve against great competition."

The Blue Devils, who are receiving votes in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll, opened the match with three quick points before a solo block by Abby Skryd ended the run. Fellow freshman Shiah Sanders followed with a kill a few plays later, following a Duke overpass, to bring the Leathernecks within one at 4-3. Duke was able to extend its lead to 16-9 before a Sanders kill and a Blue Devil error pulled the Leathernecks within five. Western was unable to get any closer in the opening set, as Duke extended its lead before closing out a 25-15 victory.

Sanders, who ended the match with six kills, put Western on the board for the first time in the second set with a kill from the outside. Sanders would tack on another kill moments later, followed a Kaili Simmons ace, to pull Western within a point. The Purple and Gold remained in the set with a three-point burst highlighted by a Peyton Crosser kill and a combination block by Sanders and Lexi Kolschefski. Duke built a cushion off of a 6-1 run to put them ahead by nine late in the set. The two would trade points down the stretch before Duke claimed the second set, 25-15. A 7-1 run to open the third set gave Duke the advantage needed to claim the match with a 25-13 victory in the third set.

Crosser and Sanders paced the attack Saturday, recording seven and six kills, respectively. Skryd dished out a team-high 16 assists while Bauder recorded four blocks on the day. Simmons anchored the defense with 10 kills for the Purple and Gold.

Western has a short turnaround as the team hits the road on Tuesday, September 8, for a midweek contest against Saint Louis. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
