Volleyball Falls to Saint Louis in Midweek Action

Indiana State Tournament up next for Leathernecks

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – The Western Illinois volleyball team had a short turnaround Tuesday (Sept. 8) evening, as the Leathernecks hit the road to take on Saint Louis in midweek action. Saint Louis took a 3-0 decision over Western to move to 3-5 on the year while Western falls to 0-7.

"As a team we have to find more consistency and aggressive play," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "This is something we will continue to improve upon as our team gets more comfortable on the court with each other."

The opening frame featured a series of runs for both teams. After the Billikens opened the set with a 4-0 run, Western countered with a four straight points, highlighted by a Krishna Merriman ace, to even the score at 4-all. Shortly after, Western used a 3-0 run to take the lead at 7-5. Sierra Bauder opened the run with a kill, Kate Hickey followed with an ace, and Bauder and Peyton Crosser closed the run with a combination block out of the middle. Saint Louis opened a 12-7 lead on Western, but the Purple and Gold countered with another four-point run to pull within one. From there, the two teams would trade points down the stretch. Western would battle until the end, ultimately dropping the opening set, 25-20.

In the second set, Western opened to an early 6-4 lead following a kill from Abby Skryd and an ace from Bauder. After Saint Louis built a four-point advantage midway through the set, Jordan Jackson recorded a kill out of the middle and Bauder and Reilly Dunne paired up for a block to pull Western within two at 13-11. The Billikens were able to take control of the set and went to the locker room with a 25-17 victory.

The third set, which was claimed by Saint Louis, 25-17, featured freshman Lexi Kolschefski. Kolschefski, who entered the match for the first time late in the second set, accounted for seven of the 17 WIU points in the third set thanks to six kills and solo block. The La Habra, California, native had her best performance in the Purple and Gold, as she finished the night with a team-high eight kills. Kolschefski's tallied the eight kills on 10 total attacks, while recording no errors, to give the middle hitter a .800 hitting percentage on the night.

"It was great seeing Lexi step out there tonight and make an impact on the game. She led us offensively and that balance in the middle is something we need," added Richardson.

Bauder tallied a team-high two service aces and three blocks on the night, Skryd dished out 29 assists, and Hickey picked up eight digs.

Western returns to action this weekend, September 11-12, as the Leathernecks travel to Evansville, Indiana, for the Evansville Tournament. Western will face Northern Kentucky, Evansville, and Jackson State over the two days of competition.
