Track and field performed well in preparation for The Summit League Championships.

FULL RESULTS

NORMAL, Ill. -
Western Illinois track and field had a day of first-place finishes and personal records as the men and women both finished second at the Redbird Invitational, hosted by Illinois State on Saturday (May 2).

The Leathernecks had 30 finishes in the top five, including a pair of first-place finishes from Jasmine Brown in the long and triple jumps.

"It was an interesting day to say the least. We had a handful of simply amazing performances," said head coach Mike Stevenson following the meet. "The 200 meter runners, today, were scary fast. They dropped so much time across the board it was amazing. Alyssa Johnson was very tough today as she ran the 400 and 800 meter races back-to-back with good times. Aaliyah White had a good race in the 400 hurdles, her first time in the event since week one due to injury. The throwers added several personal bests once again. Hopefully all of the positives add up to some serious performances when we host conference in about a week and a half."

In addition to Brown's success, Sheila Grant-Shaffer took home third in the hammer throw with a personal-best toss of 54.48 meters. Western women also swept fourth, fifth, and sixth in the hammer throw event as well. Grant-Shaffer also finished third in the shot put while Mary-Bianca Fuller grabbed fourth in the discus. Darcy Arendt grabbed a second and fourth-place finish in the high jump and javelin to round out the top field performances. Arendt also finished fifth in the 100 hurdles.

On the track for the Purple and Gold women Alyssa Johnson stood out the 800 meters, finshing third. However, it White crossing the line first in the 400 hurdles that stole the show. Sierra Woods took fourth in the 200 meters and Madison Lefler came in fifth in the 5000 meter run.

On the men's side Alex Platz placed fourth in the pole vault, and Max Ford grabbed third in the men's javelin with Jared Rohn coming in fourth. Danny Ingram raced to a third-place finish in the 400 meter dash with Tyler Younkin on his heels in fourth. Xavier Levy crossed second in the 200 meter dash with a new personal record of 21.07 seconds. Justin Kilpatrick grabbed fourth in the 200 in personal-best fashion. A top-two finish from Ryan Wojdyla in the men's 5000 meters capped off a fruitful day in Normal, Illinois.

In addition to Western's 30 top-five finishes, the team also set 20 new personal records. The Leathernecks will look to carry that success into The Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hanson Field in Macomb, starting May 13.
