Baseball Drops Game 2 Slugfest to South Dakota State

WIU and SDSU combined for 29 hits and 28 runs on Saturday (May 2).

BROOKINGS, S.D. - Western Illinois baseball battled South Dakota State on Saturday (May 2) in a 19-9, eight-inning loss where both teams combined for 29 hits in the game.

Colton Pogue went 3-for-4 at the plate and scored three runs. Mark Garton hit the second home run of his career while Kendall King smacked his first career homer. Despite the offensive production, Western drops to 15-27 overall and 8-15 in The Summit League. SDSU improves to 27-18 and 14-9.

"Overall I was pleased. We're a little bit fried right now with all the travel and midweek games, but the guys are still giving it what they got," said head coach Ryan Brownlee after the loss. "I thought when we got it to 12-9 we were going to win it. I give our guys a lot of credit for staying in there. Even when we got down quite a bit they hung in there. Really, when it's an offensive day like that, you just have to find a way, on the mound, to keep it close. If you can keep it to one run an inning instead of three it's a different scenario. We could have handled one situation better, but that's a learning experience that we'll learn from and move on. I look forward to getting back out there again tomorrow and seeing Nick (Milligan) get his first start."

Offense was the name of the game as the scoring being right away in the first. Western's only lead of the game came when Brent Turner, Colton Pogue, and Jake Moore all singled with nobody out. Moore's hit down the left-field line brought in Turner to put the Leathernecks up 1-0.

However, SDSU's bats were equally hot as the Jackrabbits grabbed two runs in the first and three more in the second to take a four-run lead that continued to grow.

King's home run in the top of the fourth and Garton's home run in the fifth kept the Leathernecks within five, and two more runs in the sixth cut the lead to three, but that was the closest WIU would get.

Tom Constand (3-6) left the game early with arm soreness, but would be saddled with the loss. Garton would end the game with four RBIs in a 2-for-3 effort at the plate. Chris Tschida also added a pair of hits as the Purple and Gold combined for 11 as a team.

The series finale is set for Sunday (May 3) at 1 p.m. If Western can win, it will earn a series split on the season with SDSU.
