Jasmine Brown Sets School Long Jump Record on Day 2 of Summit League Championships

The Leathernecks advanced six individuals to Friday's finals.

DAY TWO RESULTS

MACOMB, Ill. -
On day two (May 14) of The Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships Jasmine Brown broke Western Illinois' long jump record by inches on a rainy day in Macomb. The Leathernecks also advanced six to Friday's running finals while scoring points in five events.

Brown's record-setting leap of 6.08 meters came on her first attempt as she cruised to a second-place finish in the women's long jump. Her performance was not bested but only matched by Analisa Huschle of South Dakota as Brown was awarded second based on judge's decision. The DeKalb, Illinois native broke a record that had only been matched once since 1982. Kristin Owens and Wendy Winters were the former owners of the top long-jump mark.

In addition to Brown's performance, Sheila Grant-Shaffer scored points for the Purple and Gold in the shot put with an eighth-place finish. Darcy Arendt scored for Western in the heptathlon, finishing seventh, and Alyssa Johnson advanced to the 800 meter finals while Aaliyah White moved on in the 400 meter hurdles. Both finals are set to be run on Friday afternoon.

For Western's men it was Max Ford and Cedric Cheeks scoring points for WIU. Ford finished fourth in the decathlon and Cheeks earned eighth in the men's long jump with a leap of 6.45 meters. Xavier Levy and Justin Kilpatrick earned a chance to defend their 100 and 200 meter titles, advancing to the finals in both events with a trio of record-setting performances. Tyler Younkin also joined the duo as he earned a spot in Saturday's 100 and 200 finals. Josh Thomas joined the finals party with a 'Top 8' performance in the 400 hurdles.

Friday's events will begin at 11 a.m. with the women's discus and triple jump. Running events are set to start at 12:20 p.m. with the final event of The Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships to be run at 3:25 p.m. with awards to follow. Live video will be available at GoLeathernecks.com/watch.
