Leathernecks Fall to Fort Wayne at Summit League Championships

Women's tennis concludes season against Mastodons

FORT WAYNE, IND. - Western Illinois women's tennis took to the courts one last time as the team faced Fort Wayne in the opening round of The Summit League Championships on Friday, April 24. The Mastodons, tournament hosts, got the best of Western as the Leathernecks dropped a 0-4 decision.

"Today we played much better in doubles," said head coach Raquel Allen. "We were playing deeper shots and approaching the balls aggressively. I am very proud of all of our accomplishments this season and look forward to next year."

Fort Wayne opened the match by picking up a victory at No. 2 doubles to secure the doubles point. After Western was forced to forfeit the No. 3 doubles match, Arianna Demos and Nicole Jones fell by a 1-8 final at No. 2 to give the Mastodons the doubles point. Courtney Lubbers and Jenna Wallace were leading 5-4 in their No. 1 doubles match when play was suspended.

In singles action, the Mastodons collected victories at the No. 3, 5 and 6 position en route to the victory. At No. 6 singles, Fort Wayne picked up its second point of the match via forfeit. Andriana Johnson took to the No. 5 position and fell by a final score of 0-6, 0-6. Wallace competed as Western's No. 3 position and dropped her match, 1-6, 3-6. The final three matches were suspended with all three matches in the middle of the second set. Lubbers dropped the first set at No. 1, 3-6, and was trailing 2-4 in the second set when play was stopped. Demos competed at the No. 2 position and was trailing 0-3 in the second set after dropping the first set, 3-6. Jones fell 2-6 in the first set of her No. 4 singles match and was down, 1-3, in the second set at the stoppage in play.

Western Illinois will return its entire roster next season and will look continue to improve in preparation of the 2015-16 season.
